91_HR0708 LRB9113665CBcb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives were 3 saddened to learn of the death of Ira Marks of Hyde Park on 4 March 15, 2000; and 5 WHEREAS, Mr. Marks was formerly President of Marks Bros. 6 Jewelers, Inc., a Chicago based chain of retail jewelry 7 stores operating over 100 stores in regional shopping malls 8 throughout the United States under the name of Whitehall 9 Jewelers and Lundstrom Jewelers; and 10 WHEREAS, Mr. Marks was a World War II veteran of the 11 United States Army, enlisting in the infantry as a private 12 and after attending Officer Candidate School, served as a 13 second lieutenant with the 338th Regiment of the 85th 14 Infantry Division in Italy; he was severely injured and he 15 was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart; and 16 WHEREAS, A life-long resident of Hyde Park, Mr. Marks was 17 actively involved in numerous civic causes, especially as a 18 Director of the State Street Council, Chicago Child Care 19 Society, Spertus College, and the Harper Court Foundation; he 20 was a Visiting Committee member of the Oriental Institute of 21 the University of Chicago; like his father before him, Ira 22 Marks was an active member of the Chicago Sinai Congregation; 23 he was also a member of the Standard Club; and 24 WHEREAS, Mr. Marks and his wife, Janina, established the 25 Ira and Janina Marks Charitable Trust, which supports 26 numerous Chicago and national charitable organizations; and 27 WHEREAS, The passing of Ira Marks will be deeply felt, 28 especially by his wife, Janina; his sons and 29 daughters-in-law, Daniel and Vida, Peter and Dorothy, and 30 Paul and Anya; his step-son and wife, Sigi and Elizabeth 31 Nagys; his nine grandchildren; his brother and sister-in-law, -2- LRB9113665CBcb 1 James and Rosaline Marks; and his sister and brother-in-law, 2 June and Harold Patinkin; therefore, be it 3 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 4 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 5 we note with sorrow and regret the death of Ira Marks and 6 extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends; and 7 be it further 8 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 9 presented to his widow, Janina Marks.
