91_HR0695 LRB9113649KBkb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, Adams Township in LaSalle County was organized 3 on April 2, in the year 1850 at a meeting of its citizens; an 4 election was held and the following positions were filled: 5 Supervisor, Clerk Assessor, Collector, three Commissioners of 6 Highways, two Justices, and two Constables; and 7 WHEREAS, The first settlement in the area was in 1836; 8 the early settlers were mainly of Norwegian descent; on 9 February 12, 1849, the Township Organization Law was passed 10 and LaSalle County began dividing the county into election 11 precincts; and 12 WHEREAS, The Village of Leland (formerly Whitfield) grew 13 with the coming of the railroad and an increase in the grain 14 trade; today Leland is made up of 875 residents; grain and 15 livestock farms continue to be the financial livelihood for 16 township residents; and 17 WHEREAS, Adams Township will celebrate its 18 sesquicentennial year at a dedication ceremony, with a 19 historical display and open house, on Sunday, April 2, 2000; 20 and 21 WHEREAS, Adams Township will dedicate a memorial with the 22 bell from the first town hall, in what was originally the 23 Baptist Church, and a bronze plaque commemorating those who 24 have helped to establish and promote township government; 25 therefore, be it 26 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 27 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 28 we congratulate the elected officials and all the residents 29 who have served the township; they have proven that residents 30 of Adams Township in LaSalle County continue to value the 31 high ideals of their forebears and have kept the Township a -2- LRB9113649KBkb 1 vital, working body since that time; and be it further 2 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 3 presented to the township board of Adams Township along with 4 our sincere congratulations for a job well done.
