91_HR0644 LRB9113471CBcb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, American women of every race, class, and ethnic 3 background have made historic contributions to the growth and 4 strength of our nation in countless recorded and unrecorded 5 ways; and 6 WHEREAS, American women have played and continue to play 7 a critical economic, cultural, and social role in every 8 sphere of the life of the nation by constituting a 9 significant portion of the labor force working inside and 10 outside of the home; and 11 WHEREAS, American women have played a unique role 12 throughout the history of the nation by providing the 13 majority of the volunteer labor force of the nation; and 14 WHEREAS, American women were particularly important in 15 the establishment of early charitable, philanthropic, and 16 cultural institutions in our nation; and 17 WHEREAS, American women of every race, class, and ethnic 18 background served as early leaders in the forefront of every 19 major progressive social change movement; and 20 WHEREAS, American women have been leaders, not only in 21 securing their own rights of suffrage and equal opportunity, 22 but also in the abolitionist movement, the emancipation 23 movement, the industrial labor movement, the civil rights 24 movement, and other movements, especially the peace movement, 25 which create a more fair and just society for all; and 26 WHEREAS, Despite these contributions, the role of 27 American women in history has been consistently overlooked 28 and undervalued in the literature, teaching, and study of 29 American history; therefore, be it 30 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE -2- LRB9113471CBcb 1 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 2 March is designated as "Women's History Month", and the 3 Governor is authorized and requested to issue a proclamation 4 calling upon the people of Illinois to observe this month 5 with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities; and be 6 it further 7 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 8 delivered to the Central Illinois Coalition of Labor Union 9 Women and to Governor George Ryan.
