91_HR0616 LRB9113400CBcb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, On January 31, 2000, President William J. 3 Clinton named Stuart Rice of the University of Chicago a 4 recipient of the 1999 National Medal of Science; and 5 WHEREAS, The Frank Hixon Distinguished Service Professor 6 in Chemistry, Stuart Rice also has received the University's 7 Quantrell Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching; and 8 WHEREAS, He is known to be outstandingly creative as a 9 researcher who has contributed in deep and important ways to 10 the educational enterprise at the University and to the 11 scientific community in the United States and throughout the 12 world; and 13 WHEREAS, Professor Stuart Rice, a Chicago faculty member 14 since 1957, was cited for changing the very nature of modern 15 physical chemistry through his research, teaching and 16 writing, and for using imaginative approaches to both 17 experiment and theory that have inspired a generation of 18 scientists; and 19 WHEREAS, Professor Rice has worked in virtually every 20 area of physical chemistry, he has made bold theoretical 21 predictions that met early opposition from his colleagues; 22 these ideas were later verified in experiments conducted in 23 some cases by the skeptics themselves; and 24 WHEREAS, Professor Rice has helped to shape science 25 policy at the University and throughout the nation as Dean of 26 Physical Sciences from 1981 to 1995 and as a member of the 27 National Science Board from 1980 to 1986; and 28 WHEREAS, Professor Stuart Rice has earned the respect and 29 admiration of all who have had the privilege of knowing him; 30 therefore, be it -2- LRB9113400CBcb 1 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 2 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 3 we congratulate Professor Stuart Rice on being named a 4 recipient of the 1999 National Medal of Science; and be it 5 further 6 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 7 presented to Professor Stuart Rice.
