91_HR0615 LRB9113399CBcb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, On January 31, 2000, President William J. 3 Clinton named Leo Kadanoff of the University of Chicago a 4 recipient of the 1999 National Medal of Science; and 5 WHEREAS, The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur 6 Distinguished Service Professor in Physics and Mathematics, 7 Leo Kadanoff also has received the University's Quantrell 8 Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching; and 9 WHEREAS, He is known to be outstandingly creative as a 10 researcher who has contributed in deep and important ways to 11 the educational enterprise at the University and to the 12 scientific community in the United States and throughout the 13 world; and 14 WHEREAS, Professor Leo Kadanoff, a University faculty 15 member since 1978, was cited for leadership in fundamental 16 theoretical research in statistical, solid state, and 17 nonlinear physics which has led to numerous and important 18 applications in engineering urban planning, computer science, 19 hydrodynamics, biology, applied mathematics, and geophysics; 20 and 21 WHEREAS, In the 1960s, Professor Kadanoff made innovative 22 and original contributions to the understanding of phase 23 changes, such as the change of water from liquid to ice; in 24 later years, working in collaboration with students, junior 25 scientists, and colleagues, he helped construct a new field 26 of knowledge called soft condensed matter physics; and 27 WHEREAS, One of his particular contributions has been to 28 use and to show others how to use computer models and 29 simplified conceptual models for better understanding the 30 world; and 31 WHEREAS, Professor Leo Kadanoff has earned the respect -2- LRB9113399CBcb 1 and admiration of all who have had the privilege of knowing 2 him; therefore, be it 3 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 4 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 5 we congratulate Professor Leo Kadanoff on being named a 6 recipient of the 1999 National Medal of Science; and be it 7 further 8 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 9 presented to Professor Leo Kadanoff.
