91_HR0614 LRB9113398CBcb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, On January 31, 2000, President William J. 3 Clinton named James Cronin of the University of Chicago a 4 recipient of the 1999 National Medal of Science; and 5 WHEREAS, A Nobel laureate and University Professor 6 Emeritus in Physics, Professor Cronin also has received the 7 University's Quantrell Award for Excellence in Undergraduate 8 Teaching; and 9 WHEREAS, He is known to be outstandingly creative as a 10 researcher who has contributed in deep and important ways to 11 the educational enterprise at the University and to the 12 scientific community in the United States and throughout the 13 world; and 14 WHEREAS, Professor Cronin, a Chicago native, was cited 15 for fundamental contributions to the fields of elementary 16 particle physics and astrophysics and as a leader in creating 17 an international effort to determine the unknown origins of 18 very high energy cosmic rays; and 19 WHEREAS, Professor Cronin co-heads the Auger Project, a 20 $50 million international collaboration of 250 scientists in 21 19 nations to track down the mysterious sources of rare but 22 extremely powerful cosmic rays that periodically bombard the 23 earth; and 24 WHEREAS, He devoted much of his early career to particle 25 physics, working with Princeton University's Val Fitch at 26 Brookhaven National Laboratory in 1964, they were the first 27 scientists to observe the laws of nature operating 28 differently on matter and antimatter; they received the Nobel 29 Prize in physics in 1980; and 30 WHEREAS, Professor Cronin has earned the respect and 31 admiration of all who have had the privilege of knowing him; -2- LRB9113398CBcb 1 therefore, be it 2 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 3 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 4 we congratulate Professor James Cronin on being named a 5 recipient of the 1999 National Medal of Science; and be it 6 further 7 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 8 presented to Professor James Cronin.
