91_HR0601 LRB9113305CBcb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the House are happy to recognize 3 the excellence of young athletes and wish to congratulate the 4 DePaul Girls Softball Team on an outstanding season during 5 1999, winning the NCAA Regional Title for the first time in 6 the history of the program and advancing to the College World 7 Series; and 8 WHEREAS, Led by Head Coach Eugene Lenti and Assistant 9 Coaches Sara Hayes and Leigh Podlesny, the team ended the 10 season with a record of 54-14, the most wins in school 11 history; and 12 WHEREAS, The members of the Blue Demons are: Tatum Allen, 13 Tami Bouck, Liza Brown, Toni Campbell, Katy Carter, Jenny 14 Davis, Shavaughne Desecki, Jen Heath, Yvette Healy, Alyssa 15 Hyem, Dana Jakusz, Julie Luna, Molly Petullo, Kristie Prine, 16 Nicole Terpstra, Kate Otto, Vanessa Saavedra, Molly Sircher, 17 Amy Starr, and Karen Stewart; and 18 WHEREAS, They ranked third in the final USA Today/NFCA 19 Top 25 poll and became the third team in DePaul history to 20 reach the Final Four of an NCAA Championship; and 21 WHEREAS, Earning the school's fifth NCAA Tournament berth 22 in the past six years, the Blue Demons won the Mid-continent 23 Conference Regular Season Championship and tournament title 24 without losing a game; and 25 WHEREAS, Liza Brown was the program's second first team 26 All-American while Nicole Terpstra and Shavaughne Desecki 27 were second team selections; and 28 WHEREAS, Yvette Healy and Karen Stewart were second team 29 GTE/Academic All-American selections and Liza Brown, Nicole 30 Terpstra, and Shavaughne Desecki were first team All-Midwest 31 Region while Karen Stewart was on the second team; and -2- LRB9113305CBcb 1 WHEREAS, Nicole Terpstra, Liza Brown, Yvette Healy, Karen 2 Stewart, and Dana Jakusz were on the NCAA Tournament 3 All-Regional team and Katy Carter and Julie Luna were on the 4 College World Series All-Tournament team; and 5 WHEREAS, Katy Carter made the CNN "Play of the Day" for a 6 catch and throw she made against UCLA on May 27; and 7 WHEREAS, Named as the Mid-Continent Conference Player of 8 the Year was Liza Brown, Pitcher of the Year was Nicole 9 Terpstra, and Coach of the Year was Eugene Lenti; and 10 WHEREAS, Liza Brown, Nicole Terpstra, Shavaughne Desecki, 11 Yvette Healy, Karen Stewart, Julie Luna, and Toni Campbell 12 were named first team All-Mid-Continent Conference while Dana 13 Jakusz was on the second team; Nicole Terpstra was the MVP of 14 the Mid-Continent Conference Tournament and was joined on the 15 All-Tournament team by Liza Brown, Yvette Healy, Katy Carter 16 and Karen Stewart; and 17 WHEREAS, Yvette Healy, Dana Jakusz, Karen Stewart, Nicole 18 Terpstra, Jean Heath, Alyssa Hyem, Kate Otto, Vanessa 19 Saavedra, and Molly Sircher were all named to the 20 Mid-Continent Conference Academic Honor Roll; and 21 WHEREAS, Nicole Terpstra finished her four years with 22 every career pitching record in DePaul history and set single 23 season school records for wins and strikeouts; and 24 WHEREAS, Karen Stewart, who started every game of her 25 four-year career, finished as the school's all-time leader in 26 home runs, RBIs, and doubles; and 27 WHEREAS, Yvette Healy was first in career singles and 28 career stolen bases, being the only player in DePaul history 29 to steal over 100 bases; and 30 WHEREAS, The team was assisted by Managers Kristi -3- LRB9113305CBcb 1 Sebestyen, Jim Hosty, and Dan Cruz, Trainer Joe Kanupke, 2 Athletic Director Bill Bradshaw, and Sr. Associate Athletic 3 Director Jean Lenti Ponsetto; and 4 WHEREAS, All supporters of the DePaul Blue Demons should 5 be proud of the poise, dedication, and athletic ability of 6 the young women who were members of this team; therefore, be 7 it 8 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 9 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 10 we congratulate the coaches and team of the DePaul Blue 11 Demons on a terrific season and that we commend the players 12 and their coaches on good sportsmanship, dedication, and hard 13 work; and be it further 14 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be 15 presented to Coach Eugene Lenti, Athletic Director Bill 16 Bradshaw, and Father Jack Minogue, C.M., President of DePaul 17 University.
