91_HR0568 LRB9110348CBcbA 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that the members of 3 this Body welcome the opportunity to recognize citizens of 4 this State who have made outstanding contributions and 5 sacrifices to mankind; and 6 WHEREAS, Many American volunteers fought on behalf of the 7 Jewish People for Israel's War of Independence in 1948-49; 8 and 9 WHEREAS, At great personal risk, these men and women 10 offered themselves and their services to assist the Nation of 11 Israel during crucial times; and 12 WHEREAS, There were 4,000 volunteers who went to Israel 13 during its War of Independence in 1948; they came from the 14 United States, Canada, England, and South Africa; many were 15 World War II veterans eager to use their experience to defend 16 the new nation of Israel; and 17 WHEREAS, They served in fourteen branches of the Israel 18 military during the war; ninety percent of the new Iraeli air 19 force were Americans; many American and Canadian volunteers 20 manned the ships that brought 35,000 holocaust survivors to 21 Israel; many lost their lives defending Israel in this great 22 struggle for independence; and 23 WHEREAS, Several of the men who volunteered were 24 residents of Chicago: Avrum Israel Weinzweig, David Gutmann, 25 Jules Cubernek, Leonard Sherman, Milton Shulman, Moshe 26 Litoff, Christopher Magee, John McConville, and William 27 Lichtman; therefore, be it 28 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 29 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 30 we take pleasure in honoring Avrum Israel Weinzweig, David 31 Gutmann, Jules Cubernek, Leonard Sherman, Milton Shulman, -2- LRB9110348CBcbA 1 Moshe Litoff, Christopher Magee, John McConville, and William 2 Lichtman for their sacrifice and the service they gave to the 3 Nation of Israel during the War of Independence, and we also 4 honor the courageous men who died flying and fighting for 5 Israel's independence; and be it further 6 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be 7 presented to the men mentioned above.
