1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of this House are pleased and
3 honored to recognize significant milestones in the lives of
4 individuals of this great State; and
5 WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that Caroline
6 "Carrie" Volkening of Schaumburg is celebrating the 105th
7 anniversary of her birth on December 27, 1999; and
8 WHEREAS, She was born in Bellevue, Kansas, on December
9 27, 1894, the fifth oldest of seven children of German
10 immigrants; at twelve years of age, the family moved to
11 Schaumburg; and
12 WHEREAS, Her family homesteaded a 160 acre farm located
13 on Schaumburg Road; she attended an English speaking public
14 school through the eighth grade; after that, she assisted her
15 family in farming operations, including milking seven cows
16 twice a day and tending to the chickens, ducks, and geese;
17 she was known for her cooking and baking abilities; and
18 WHEREAS, She helped her mother feed and shelter the local
19 homeless people; her family has a long history of being
20 active members in the Village of Schaumburg; and
21 WHEREAS, Carrie Volkening is a member of the Emmanual
22 United Church of Christ; she has been active in that
23 congregation, serving in many roles, since the family moved
24 to Schaumburg in 1906; and
25 WHEREAS, The oldest resident of Schaumburg, Carrie
26 Volkening currently lives at Friendship Village; and
27 WHEREAS, Schaumburg is fortunate to have such a caring
28 person as Carrie Volkening; therefore, be it
29 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
30 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that

1 we congratulate Carrie Volkening on the 105th anniversary of
2 her birth and thank her for all the caring and sharing she
3 has given to the community; and be it further
4 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5 presented to Carrie Volkening with our respect and
6 admiration.
