91_HR0390 LRB9107017CBcbA 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, On Sunday, June 13, 1999, Alpha Kappa Alpha 3 Sorority, Theta Omega Chapter, will be honoring Irma Frazier 4 Clarke for her many dedicated years of service at DuSable 5 High School; the ceremony will be held at the school library 6 and the library will be named in her honor; and 7 WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha is the oldest African American 8 Sorority of college-trained women and was founded at Howard 9 University in Washington, D.C., in 1908; Theta Omega Chapter 10 is located in Chicago; and 11 WHEREAS, Irma Frazier Clarke is an Alpha Kappa Alpha 12 woman, with a life membership along with being a former 13 national officer; she has held office and chaired committees 14 in Theta Omega and has a very rich and talented history in 15 the sorority; and 16 WHEREAS, She was the librarian in charge when the Chicago 17 Public Schools opened the doors of DuSable High School in 18 1935 and gave many years of devoted service until she retired 19 in 1968; and 20 WHEREAS, She was a tender, caring, and sincere teacher; 21 she started the collection of African American history books 22 and sponsored the Library Club; she inspired many students by 23 her dedication as well as her high level of professionalism; 24 and 25 WHEREAS, She was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and has 26 spent 40 years with the Chicago Public Schools; she earned an 27 associate's degree from the University of Kansas and a 28 bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois; and 29 WHEREAS, She has been a board member of the YWCA of 30 Metropolitan Chicago and the Hyde Park Neighborhood Club and 31 has been affiliated with the Chicago Urban League, the -2- LRB9107017CBcbA 1 American Library Association, St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 2 the Illinois Association of School Librarians, the High 3 School Librarians of Chicagoland, and Beta Phi Mu Honorary 4 Library Science Fraternity; and 5 WHEREAS, She was given an award from the YMCA of 6 Metropolitan Chicago for 30 years of continuous service and 7 awards from the Women's Council of the Chicago Heart 8 Association and from the Harriet M. Harris YWCA; and 9 WHEREAS, On Sunday, June 13, 1999, a portrait of Mrs. 10 Clarke will be given to the school library and a birthday 11 celebration will be held; Mrs. Clarke will be 99 years on 12 June 16, 1999; therefore, be it 13 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 14 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 15 we congratulate Mrs. Irma Frazier Clarke on the honor being 16 bestowed upon her by having the DuSable High School Library 17 being named after her and thank her for the many things she 18 has done throughout her years; and be it further 19 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 20 presented to her as an expression of our esteem.
