1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives would like to wish a happy 50th anniversary
4 to Wood River Township Hospital; and
5 WHEREAS, Wood River Township Hospital is celebrating its
6 50th anniversary on Sunday, August 1, 1999; the celebration
7 will include visits from the first patient, Mrs. Anna Alston
8 (Westbrook), who was admitted on August 1, 1949, the parents
9 of the first baby, delivered on August 2, 1949, Mr. and Mrs.
10 Eugene Harmon, and the last remaining member of the original
11 medical staff, Dr. Harry S. Mendelson; and
12 WHEREAS, Wood River Township Hospital was the first
13 hospital built in the State under a law passed by the General
14 Assembly authorizing townships to levy taxes for the
15 construction, operation, and maintenance of hospitals; the
16 vote was taken on May 7, 1946, was approved, and on July 31,
17 1948 Congressman Melvin Price laid the cornerstone; on August
18 1, 1949 the Wood River Township Hospital officially opened
19 for business; on January 15, 1953 the Wood River Township
20 Hospital Woman's Auxiliary was organized; Mrs. Helen Stevens,
21 an original member of the Auxiliary, is still a member; and
22 WHEREAS, The time capsule from the cornerstone will be
23 opened on August 1, 1999; the cornerstone is currently
24 covered with a sheet of Plexiglas for public viewing; and
25 WHEREAS, The hospital has seen many dignitaries and
26 special visitors over the years, including: former
27 Congressman Melvin Price and former Director of Public Health
28 Dr. Roland Cross were on hand for the hospital's dedication;
29 former Illinois Governor Dan Walker and former Director of
30 Public Health Dr. Joyce Lashof were on hand for the Trauma
31 Center dedication; for the 30th anniversary guests included
32 former State Senator Sam Vadalabene, Congressman Price, State

1 Senator Vince Demuzio, and former State Representatives John
2 Sharp and Sam Wolf; former State Representative Jerry
3 Costello was also a guest of the hospital; and
4 WHEREAS, Wood River Township Hospital continues to serve
5 the needs of the community and the people; therefore, be it
6 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
7 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
8 we congratulate Wood River Township Hospital on it's 50th
9 anniversary; may the hospital continue to be a special part
10 of the community; and be it further
11 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12 presented to Wood River Township Hospital.
