91_HR0334 LRB9106863KBkb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives wish to congratulate Immaculate Conception 4 Parish, 2745 W. 44th Street, Chicago, on their 85th 5 anniversary; and 6 WHEREAS, Immaculate Conception began in 1914 when 60 7 Catholic Luthuanian families asked Archbishop James E. 8 Quigley to form a Lithuanian parish in Brighton Park; as a 9 result of their query, Father Anthony Briszko was appointed 10 the first pastor of the new parish; and 11 WHEREAS, On September 13, 1914 the first Mass was offered 12 at St. Joseph and St. Anne Church; on October 17, 1915 the 13 original church and school were blessed, and by 1937 the 14 church had expanded and the parish was growing; on September 15 2, 1953, Monsignor Briszko passed away; and 16 WHEREAS, Pastor Conception Parish A. Mozeris was 17 appointed on November 5, 1953; through his hard work, a new 18 church was built using contemporary designs, yet retaining 19 the traditions of the church; the first Mass was said on 20 Christmas Eve of 1964, and the dedication was on October 2, 21 1966, with Archbishop John P. Cody performing the rites; and 22 WHEREAS, In December of 1985 Monsignor Mozeris retired 23 from his position as Pastor of Immaculate Conception; 24 Reverend John Kuzinskas followed as the third pastor, and 25 Reverend Anthony C. Puchenski was appointed on March 11, 26 1988; and 27 WHEREAS, Changes in the community have made changes in 28 the church; many Catholic Spanish-speaking families have 29 moved into the area and the church has adapted itself to 30 provide for its new families; Mass and other services in the 31 church are provided in Spanish, and adult education classes -2- LRB9106863KBkb 1 teaching English have been offered at the parish school; a 2 Saturday program of religious instruction for public school 3 students was organized in the Fall of 1995, and now has an 4 enrollment of over 200 students; and 5 WHEREAS, Due to the rising costs of education many 6 families cannot afford Catholic education for their children; 7 Immaculate Conception has joined with three other parishes to 8 consolidate into one school, named after Pope John Paul II; 9 education will now take place on two campuses instead of 10 four, and will be more cost effective for families in the 11 four parishes; and 12 WHEREAS, Immaculate Conception continues to grow and 13 change with its community; therefore, be it 14 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 15 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 16 we congratulate Immaculate Conception Parish on its 85th 17 anniversary; may it continue to be a beacon of light to their 18 community; and be it further 19 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 20 presented to Immaculate Conception Parish, along with our 21 sincere regards.
