91_HR0328 LRB9106894KBkb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives would like to wish the Mennonite College of 4 Nursing a happy 80th anniversary; and 5 WHEREAS, Mennonite College of Nursing was founded in 6 1919; the college originally opened as the Mennonite 7 Sanitarium Training School founded by area Mennonite churches 8 as part of the Mennonite Sanitarium Association with the 9 purpose of providing a Christian ministry through the 10 operation of a hospital and a diploma school of nursing; and 11 WHEREAS, The name was changed to the Mennonite Hospital 12 School of Nursing in 1939; in the early 1980's the name was 13 again changed to reflect changes in the school to the 14 Mennonite College of Nursing; in 1985 the College began 15 awarding a four-year baccalaureate degree, the Bachelor of 16 Science in Nursing; and 17 WHEREAS, The North Central Association awarded the 18 College institutional accreditation in 1986, and in 1991 19 awarded 10-year continuing accreditation to the College; the 20 National League for Nursing awarded initial accreditation in 21 1987, followed by 10-year continuing accreditation in 1994; 22 and 23 WHEREAS, The graduate program was implemented in 1995; in 24 1996 the Mennonite College of Nursing's Honor Society was 25 chartered by the Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor 26 Society with its own chapter, the Xi Pi Chapter; and 27 WHEREAS, On July 1, 1999, Mennonite College of Nursing 28 will become the sixth academic college at Illinois State 29 University; the name will again change to Mennonite College 30 of Nursing at Illinois State University; the facilities will 31 move to Illinois State, with primary location in Edwards -2- LRB9106894KBkb 1 Hall; and 2 WHEREAS, The mission of Mennonite College of Nursing has 3 four interactive values: the affirmation of the dignity and 4 worth of all persons, the recognition of the wholeness of 5 life, the responsible use of nature, and the promotion of a 6 life of peace; and 7 WHEREAS, The President of Mennonite College of Nursing is 8 Kathleen A. Hogan, EdD, RN, who has served since 1980; and 9 WHEREAS, 83% of the graduates of the College remain in 10 Central Illinois; as of June of 1999, there are 2,258 11 graduates of the College; and 12 WHEREAS, On June 12, 1999, the Mennonite College of 13 Nursing will enjoy an 80-year Heritage Celebration; the theme 14 will be "Celebrate the Past-Embrace the Future"; therefore, 15 be it 16 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 17 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 18 we congratulate the Mennonite College of Nursing on 80 years 19 of dedication to education; may they continue to be an 20 invaluable part of training and assisting in the field of 21 medicine; and be it further 22 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 23 presented to the Mennonite College of Nursing.
