91_HR0253 LRB9106600KBkbA 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The Village of Glenview, Illinois will be 3 celebrating the centennial of its charter on June 20, 1999; 4 and 5 WHEREAS, In 1898 an election was held to vote for 6 incorporation, but was defeated; on June 17, 1899 the 7 question was again placed before the people and this time 8 carried by 8 votes, 59 to 51; and 9 WHEREAS, A charter was issued on June 20, 1899 and 10 Glenview (previously known as Oak Glen) was incorporated as a 11 village with 325 adults; and 12 WHEREAS, The presentation to the Village of Glenview of 13 the fountain by Edwin S. Jackman on September 15, 1917 had a 14 profound effect on the subsequent character and development 15 of the village; the dedication on that day was the first real 16 community celebration, which became known as Glenview Days; 17 and 18 WHEREAS, In 1922, the Glenview Civic Association was 19 organized by citizens of the village to carry on these days, 20 foster community spirit, and use the profits for community 21 good; and 22 WHEREAS, The objects and ideals of the Association were 23 crystallized on September 7, 1929 when the present Civic 24 Building was dedicated; the purposes of existence fulfilled, 25 the Glenview Civic Association dissolved shortly after the 26 dedication of the new building; and 27 WHEREAS, When the Civic Association disbanded, the 28 Glenview Chamber of Commerce was formed to foster community 29 good will; and 30 WHEREAS, Glenview Days celebrations were held for 40 -2- LRB9106600KBkbA 1 years, from 1917 to the last one in 1957, when the 2 fairgrounds were sold; and 3 WHEREAS, The Glenview Street Sale has been held annually 4 since 1973 and the village celebrates Independence Day each 5 year with a parade, family picnic, and fireworks; and 6 WHEREAS, In this 100th year of Glenview's charter, the 7 community continues to grow and prosper with the 8 redevelopment of downtown and the new development of the Navy 9 base; therefore, be it 10 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 11 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 12 we congratulate the Village of Glenview on their 100th 13 birthday celebration; as they go on into the next 100 years, 14 may they continue to find their little village a place they 15 can call home; and be it further 16 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 17 presented to the Village of Glenview.
