91_HR0188 LRB9106478CBcb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, Sergeant Sammy L. Davis of Flat Rock received 3 the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions when he was 4 a Private First Class with the United States Army in Vietnam, 5 west of Cai Lay on November 18, 1967; and 6 WHEREAS, Sergeant Davis received the medal for 7 conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk 8 of his life and beyond the call of duty; and 9 WHEREAS, Sgt. Davis distinguished himself while serving 10 as a cannoneer at a remote fire support base; the fire 11 support base was under heavy enemy mortar attack; 12 simultaneously, an estimated reinforced Viet Cong battalion 13 launched a fierce ground attack upon the fire support base; 14 only a river separated the Viet Cong from the fire support 15 base; and 16 WHEREAS, Sgt. Davis seized a machine gun and provided 17 covering fire for his gun crew; an enemy recoilless rifle 18 round scored a direct hit on the artillery piece, hurling the 19 gun crew from their weapon and blew Sgt. Davis into a 20 foxhole; and 21 WHEREAS, Sgt. Davis returned to the howitzer, rammed a 22 shell into the gun, and fired, which knocked him to the 23 ground; he returned to fire again when an enemy mortar round 24 exploded, injuring him painfully; Sgt. Davis continued 25 firing; and 26 WHEREAS, He fought his way across a river to 3 injured 27 comrades; while the most seriously injured was helped across, 28 Sgt. Davis protected the 2 remaining casualties until he 29 could pull them across; though suffering from painful wounds, 30 he refused medical attention, joining another howitzer crew 31 which fired at the large Viet Cong force until it broke and -2- LRB9106478CBcb 1 fled; and 2 WHEREAS, Sgt. Davis's extraordinary heroism, at the risk 3 of his life are in keeping with the highest traditions of the 4 military service; and 5 WHEREAS, The State of Illinois is proud of people like 6 Sammy L. Davis, who risked his life in the service of his 7 country; therefore, be it 8 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 9 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 10 we congratulate Sammy L. Davis in receiving the Congressional 11 Medal of Honor; that we commend him for his valor and 12 courage; and that we wish him all the best of luck in the 13 future; and be it further 14 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 15 presented to Sammy L. Davis as an expression of our esteem.
