 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., was founded in
 3    1908 as the first sorority established  by  African  American
 4    college women; and

 5        WHEREAS,   Alpha   Kappa   Alpha   is   an  international
 6    organization with  over  200,000  undergraduate  and  alumnae
 7    members; and

 8        WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha itself is an organization with
 9    a  commitment  to  promoting  education,  healthy  minds  and
10    bodies,   family   unity,   economic  development,  political
11    empowerment, cultural heritage, and the arts; and

12        WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha members who have distinguished
13    themselves individually include: Rosa  Parks,  Coretta  Scott
14    King,  Hazel  O'Leary,  Maya  Angelou,  Toni  Morrison,  Ella
15    Fitzgerald,  Phylicia  Rashad,  Zina Garrison, and Illinoisan
16    Linda White, international  president-elect  of  Alpha  Kappa
17    Alpha, Inc.; therefore, be it

18        RESOLVED,   BY   THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES  OF  THE
19    NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS,  that
20    the  members of this Body, in recognition of the achievements
21    of the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.,  and  the
22    values  for  which  they strive, do proclaim Wednesday, March
23    24, 1999, as AKA Day throughout the State of Illinois; and be
24    it further

25        RESOLVED, That a suitable  copy  of  this  resolution  be
26    presented  to  Linda  White, international president-elect of
27    Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc.
