 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS,  The  members  of  this  Body  are  honored   to
 3    recognized  significant milestones in the lives of the people
 4    of this State; and

 5        WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that Samuel  Minkus
 6    of  Chicago  is  celebrating the ninetieth anniversary of his
 7    birth; and

 8        WHEREAS,  Samuel  Minkus  was  born  March  9,  1909   in
 9    Zhitomir, Russia, to Oscar and Anna Minkus, who brought their
10    family  to the United States in 1914 and settled in Winnipeg,
11    Canada, via Ellis Island; and

12        WHEREAS, He came  to  Chicago  in  1921;  he  was  always
13    athletically inclined; he won many medals in boxing and track
14    and  field;  he  trained  Barney  Ross  and  refereed  boxing
15    matches; and

16        WHEREAS,  His  first job was at the Chesapeake & Ohio; he
17    also worked as a bookkeeper in the dairy business, and ran  a
18    venetian blind business; and

19        WHEREAS,  On  October  18,  1942,  he  was united in holy
20    matrimony to Lilliam Wein; he entered the army at the age  of
21    35 during World War II; and

22        WHEREAS,   He  entered  the  luggage  business  with  his
23    father-in-law, Joseph Wein, and sold the luggage business  in
24    1957;  he began work at Everware, Inc., where he worked until
25    he retired in 1985; and

26        WHEREAS, Mr. Minkus is the loving  father  of  two  sons,
27    Paul and Loren, and the proud grandfather of Michelle, Jamie,
28    Elizabeth, and Aaron; therefore, be it

29        RESOLVED,   BY   THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES  OF  THE
30    NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS,  that

 1    we  congratulate  Samuel Minkus on his ninetieth birthday and
 2    wish him the best for the future; and be it further

 3        RESOLVED, That a suitable  copy  of  this  resolution  be
 4    presented to him as an expression of our esteem.
