91_HR0022 LRB9101794CBcb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of this Body were saddened to learn 3 of the death of Joe Sutton of Urbana, longtime journalism 4 professor at the University of Illinois and editor of the UI 5 Alumni News, on Sunday, January 10, 1999; and 6 WHEREAS, He was born on February 12, 1914 at Memphis, 7 Tennessee, the son of Joe Campbell and Annie May Sutton; he 8 attended Milligan College from 1932 to 1934; and he earned a 9 master's degree from the University of Illinois; and 10 WHEREAS, After graduating from the University of Missouri 11 in 1937, Mr. Sutton worked as a reporter and editor at the 12 Champaign-Urbana Courier, he became city editor in 1946; he 13 also was editor of The Leader, a weekly newspaper in 14 Covington, Tennessee, from 1938 to 1940; and 15 WHEREAS, He joined the faculty of the University of 16 Illinois College of Communications in 1948; Mr. Sutton served 17 as the college's placement director, chairman of admissions 18 committee, member of the Illini Publishing Company board, and 19 other college committees; and 20 WHEREAS, He served as a captain in the 2nd Armored 21 Division during World War II; he was an elder at the First 22 Presbyterian Church at Champaign; and 23 WHEREAS, His passing will be deeply felt by his family 24 and countless friends, especially his wife, Nadine; his sons, 25 Jeffrey and Joel; his sister, Katherine L. Montague; his 26 brother, Charles A. Montague, Jr.; and four grandchildren; 27 therefore, be it 28 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 29 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 30 we note with sorrow and regret the death of Joe Sutton and 31 extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends; and -2- LRB9101794CBcb 1 be it further 2 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 3 presented to his widow, Nadine Sutton.
