1 AN ACT to amend the School Code by adding Section
2 27-23.6.
3 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
4 represented in the General Assembly:
5 Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section
6 27-23.6 as follows:
7 (105 ILCS 5/27-23.6 new)
8 Sec. 27-23.6. Anti-bias education. Beginning with the
9 2001-2002 school year, every public elementary school and
10 high school shall include in its curriculum instruction
11 designed to address intergroup conflict. The instruction may
12 include an examination of different cultures within the
13 school community and within the United States. This
14 instruction may include a discussion of disparate populations
15 working together successfully toward common goals. This
16 instruction shall promote tolerance, defuse existing
17 intergroup tensions, and create an environment that nurtures
18 constructive intergroup relations on and beyond the school
19 campus.
20 Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect on
21 July 1, 2000.
