 1        AN  ACT  to  require  principals  and  other  appropriate
 2    administrative officers of public  and  nonpublic  elementary
 3    and secondary schools to report certain criminal offenses.

 4        Be  it  enacted  by  the People of the State of Illinois,
 5    represented in the General Assembly:

 6        Section 5.  The School Code is amended by adding Sections
 7    10-21.7-5 and 34-84a.2 as follows:

 8        (105 ILCS 5/10-21.7-5 new)
 9        Sec. 10-21.7-5.  Principal to report certain felonies and
10    misdemeanors. The principal shall report the occurrence of  a
11    felony or misdemeanor offense occurring on school grounds, in
12    the  school, on a school bus, or at an activity supervised by
13    school employees to the local law enforcement  agency  within
14    24 hours after the principal becomes aware of the occurrence.

15        (105 ILCS 5/34-84a.2 new)
16        Sec.  34-84a.2.  Principal to report certain felonies and
17    misdemeanors. The principal of each attendance  center  shall
18    report  the  occurrence  of  a  felony or misdemeanor offense
19    occurring on school grounds, in the school, on a school  bus,
20    or at an activity supervised by school employees to the local
21    law  enforcement  agency  within 24 hours after the principal
22    becomes aware of the occurrence.

23        Section 10.  The Criminal Code  of  1961  is  amended  by
24    adding Section 31-9 as follows:

25        (720 ILCS 5/31-9 new)
26        Sec.  31-9.  Certain  school  officials to report certain
27    felonies and misdemeanors.
28        (a)  The principal or  other  appropriate  administrative

 1    officer  of  each  attendance center of a public or nonpublic
 2    elementary or secondary school shall report the occurrence of
 3    a felony or misdemeanor offense occurring on school  grounds,
 4    in  the school, on a school bus, or at an activity supervised
 5    by school employees  to  the  local  law  enforcement  agency
 6    within  24  hours  after  the  principal or other appropriate
 7    administrative officer becomes aware of the occurrence.
 8        (b)  Sentence.  A  person  who  knowingly  violates  this
 9    Section  is  guilty  of  a  petty offense for which the court
10    shall impose a fine of $500 for each occurrence in which  the
11    principal  or  other appropriate administrative officer fails
12    to report an offense as required by this Section.
