1 AN ACT to amend the Illinois Income Tax Act by adding
2 Section 212.
3 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
4 represented in the General Assembly:
5 Section 5. The Illinois Income Tax Act is amended by
6 adding Section 212 as follows:
7 (35 ILCS 5/212 new)
8 Sec. 212. Tax credit for volunteer firefighters. For
9 taxable years 2000 and thereafter, each taxpayer who was a
10 member in good standing of a volunteer fire department during
11 the entire taxable year is entitled to a credit against the
12 tax imposed by subsections (a) and (b) of Section 201. The
13 credit allowed under this Section may not exceed $500 or the
14 amount of the taxpayer's liability under this Act, whichever
15 is less. If the amount of the credit exceeds the taxpayer's
16 liability under this Act for the year, then the excess may
17 not be carried forward to apply to the taxpayer's liability
18 for the succeeding year. This Section is exempt from the
19 provisions of Section 250.
20 Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect July
21 1, 2000.
