 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION
 2        WHEREAS,  The  members   of   the   Illinois   House   of
 3    Representatives wish to honor Martin Koldyke on receiving the
 4    Spirit  of  Erikson Institute Award on Saturday, May 2, 1998;
 5    and
 6        WHEREAS, Erikson  Institute  is  a  graduate  school  and
 7    research  center  for  advance  study  in  child development;
 8    graduates of the Erikson Institute go on to work in  schools,
 9    daycare  centers, hospitals, and social service organizations
10    where they impact many different people on a daily basis; and
11        WHEREAS, Martin Koldyke  is  the  Chairman  of  Frontenac
12    Company  in  Chicago,  a  venture  capital firm he founded in
13    1971; and
14        WHEREAS,  Martin  Koldyke  was  raised   in   Northville,
15    Michigan; he is a graduate of Purdue University and served as
16    a   First  Lieutenant  in  the  United  States  Army  Counter
17    Intelligence Corps;  Mr.  Koldyke  currently  serves  on  the
18    boards  of  Rand McNally & Co. and American Healthcorp, Inc.;
19    before founding Frontenac Company, Mr.  Koldyke  was  a  Vice
20    President  and  voting  stockholder of Dean Witter & Company,
21    Inc.; and
22        WHEREAS, Martin Koldyke is the Chairman  of  the  Chicago
23    School  Finance  Authority, appointed by both Mayor Daley and
24    Governor Edgar; he is the founder and  Chairman  Emeritus  of
25    the  Golden  Apple Foundation for Excellence in Teaching; Mr.
26    Koldyke was appointed by President Clinton to  serve  on  the
27    President's Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for
28    Hispanic  Americans;  he  is  the  Chairman  of  the Board of
29    Trustees  of  Window  to  the  World   Communications,   Inc.
30    (WTTW/Channel  11,  WFMT  Radio);  he  presently  serves as a
31    Trustee  of   Northwestern   University,   Ravinia   Festival
32    Association,  and  The Joffrey Ballet of Chicago; Mr. Koldyke

 1    is a member of The Commercial Club of  Chicago;  he  formerly
 2    served  as  an  officer  and director of The Economic Club of
 3    Chicago and as a Trustee of The Brookings Institution, Choate
 4    Rosemary Hall and Common Cause; he  was  a  director  of  the
 5    National  Venture  Capital Association (NVCA) and chaired the
 6    NVCA's Education Committee; and
 7        WHEREAS, Mr. Koldyke has received many awards, including:
 8    the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge "Honor Roll" in 1997,
 9    the Jane Addams Hull House Association "Jane  Addams  Medal",
10    the  Scholarship and Guidance Association "S&GA Youth Service
11    Award, and The Harvard Club  of  Chicago  "Chicagoan  of  the
12    Year"  award,  all  in  1996;  the  Crain's  Chicago Business
13    "Executive of the Year", City Club of Chicago "Citizen of the
14    Year", and the Dartmouth Club of  Chicago  "Lux  in  Deserto"
15    award  for  contributions  in  education  award, all in 1993;
16    Roosevelt University's "1992 Civic  Achievement  Award",  the
17    Bank  Street College of Education's "1992 President's Medal",
18    Ernst and Young and Merrill Lynch's "1992 Entrepreneur of the
19    Year" award, and the Industry Week  magazine's  "One  of  the
20    Nation's Ten Unsung Heroes Award", all in 1992; and
21        WHEREAS,  Martin  Koldyke  and  his  wife  Patricia Blunt
22    Koldyke reside in Chicago; together they have four  children;
23    therefore, be it
24        RESOLVED,   BY   THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES  OF  THE
25    NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that  we
26    congratulate   Martin  Koldyke  on  his  great  work  and  on
27    receiving the Spirit of Erikson Institute Award;  and  be  it
28    further
29        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
30    presented to Martin Koldyke.
