90_HR0230 LRB9006949KBkb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The city of Centralia, Illinois honors many of 3 its citizens with induction into the Centralia Hall of Fame; 4 and 5 WHEREAS, Doris Crittenden Popper, operatic soprano under 6 the stage name Doris Jung, is one recent inductee into the 7 Centralia Hall of Fame; and 8 WHEREAS, Doris Popper was born in Centralia, Illinois on 9 January 1, 1924; her parents were John J. and May Crittenden, 10 who operated the landmark Crittenden Ice Cream Factory in 11 Centralia from 1915 to the end of World War II; and 12 WHEREAS, Doris Popper was a 1941 graduate of Centralia 13 High School; she was a founding class member of Centralia 14 Junior College; in 1943 she enrolled at the University of 15 Illinois; from 1943 to 1949 she studied opera under Julius 16 Cohen in Champaign, Illinois; in 1949 she moved to New York 17 City to study under Emma Zador, former German opera star; in 18 1950 she met her future husband, Felix Popper, who was 19 serving as the assistant conductor for the New York City 20 Opera; they were wed on November 3, 1951 and their son 21 Richard was born in 1952; in 1976, Doris Popper announced her 22 retirement from the operatic stage; from 1976 to 1993 she 23 worked as a teacher and coach of operatic music in New York 24 City; Doris Popper started a program entitled "Voices in 25 Progress" which brought together beginning singers with 26 advanced aspiring professionals; therefore, be it 27 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 28 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 29 salute Doris Crittenden Popper on her induction into the 30 Centralia Hall of Fame; and be it further 31 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be -2- LRB9006949KBkb 1 presented to Doris Crittenden Popper with our regards.
