90_HR0185 LRB9005772KBkbA 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives wish to send their condolences to Chicago 4 State University President Dolores Cross, upon learning of 5 the death of her mother, Ozie Tucker; and 6 WHEREAS, Ozie Tucker passed away on Monday, May 12, 1997, 7 in Plainfield, New Jersey; Ozie was born on February 11, 8 1916; Ozie held the distinction of being the first 9 African-American in Newark, New Jersey, to pass the civil 10 service examination; Ozie Tucker was employed with the county 11 telephone offices, The New Jersey Employment Service, Newark 12 City Hospital, and the Ivy Haven Nursing Home; and 13 WHEREAS, Ozie Tucker is remembered for being an 14 inspiration to her children; Ozie Tucker attended school in 15 the evenings, worked during the day, and set an example for 16 her two daughters; and 17 WHEREAS, Ozie Tucker attended Virginia Mecklenburg's 18 County School, Raleigh Wake County Washington High School, 19 and was a graduate of the Chase City, Virginia Thyne 20 Institute in 1934; in addition, Ozie Tucker attended Rutgers 21 University Evening School, Sawyer Business School, and Union 22 County College in New Jersey; and 23 WHEREAS, Ozie Tucker married her husband Charles, a 24 tailoring business worker, in December of 1934; Ms. Tucker 25 served the Fayetville Street Baptist Church as secretary, in 26 addition to serving for the tenant league clubs for women and 27 other church organizations; and 28 WHEREAS, Ozie Tucker wrote weekly columns for the New 29 Jersey Herald, New Jersey Record, and the Newark News; as a 30 columnist, Ms. Tucker interviewed celebrities ranging from 31 Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of President Franklin Roosevelt, -2- LRB9005772KBkbA 1 singer Marion Anderson, and dancer Katherine Dunham; and 2 WHEREAS, Ozie Tucker is survived by her two loving 3 daughters, Chicago State University President Dolores Cross, 4 and Jean McRae; and her five grandchildren, Jane Cross, an 5 attorney; Thomas Cross, Jr., a college music instructor; 6 Steven, Karen, and Tina McRae; therefore, be it 7 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 8 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 9 mourn, along with her family and friends, the death of Ozie 10 Tucker, and send our sincere condolences in this time of 11 sorrow; and be it further 12 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 13 presented to the family of Ms. Ozie Tucker.
