Using the Illinois Compiled Statutes and Public Acts
Viewing Public Acts
Many Public Acts contain underscored and stricken text
because House and Senate rules
require the use of stricken text to
indicate deletions from an existing Act and underscored text to indicate
additions to an existing Act. Almost all browsers display underscored
text properly; however, some older browsers and text-only
browsers do not display stricken text properly. The following
line of text should appear stricken:
This line of text should appear stricken. If the above line of text does not appear stricken, you
should not view Public Acts with your current browser because
the Public Acts will not display correctly in your browser.
How does a statute differ from a Public Act?
Public Acts are bills that have become law. The Illinois
Compiled Statutes (ILCS) are a cumulative organization of
Public Acts into a coherent framework. Most, but not all,
Public Acts are incorporated into the Illinois Compiled
Statutes. Some Public Acts and portions of Public Acts,
such as those authorizing land conveyances or making
appropriations, are not included in the Illinois Compiled
Statutes.
What is available on this site
The version of the Illinois Compiled Statutes that appears on this site
is updated on an ongoing basis. Recent Public Acts may not yet be incorporated into the
version of the Illinois Compiled Statutes that appears on this site. Those Public Acts will
be incorporated at a later time.
Public Acts are added to this site soon after they become law. To
determine the most current law, you must check the Public Acts.
Organization of the statutes
See
Organization of the Illinois Compiled Statutes (ILCS) for a discussion of the
organization of the statutes.
Multiple versions of
statutes
Sometimes
this site shows multiple versions of a Section of the statutes. This is usually
because multiple Public Acts amend the same Section, multiple new Sections have
the same Section number, a Public Act has a delayed effective date, or a version
of the Section has been held to be unconstitutional. There is a parenthetical
reference above each version that shows the derivation of the version. For
information concerning construction of multiple versions and the process of
combining them, see
5 ILCS 70/6 and Chapter 70 of the
Illinois Bill Drafting Manual. For information concerning renumbering
Sections that have the same Section number, see Section 70-15 of the Illinois
Bill Drafting Manual. For information concerning multiple versions resulting
from delayed effective dates and unconstitutionality, see Section 25-50 of the
Illinois Bill Drafting Manual.
