|
2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Rachel G. Smylie of Oak Park, who passed |
4 | | away on April 7, 2014; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Rachel Smylie was born on January 7, 1993 in Oak |
6 | | Park; she attended Whittier and Holmes Elementary Schools, |
7 | | Brooks Middle School, and graduated from Oak Park and River |
8 | | Forest High School in 2011; she was a junior at the University |
9 | | of Michigan at the time of her passing; and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, As a junior in high school, Rachel Smylie became |
11 | | interested in Africa through The Road Less Traveled, a |
12 | | Chicago-based organization that provides young people with |
13 | | opportunities for travel and work on meaningful projects in the |
14 | | United States and abroad while exposing them to new |
15 | | environments and different cultures; the following summer, she |
16 | | traveled with the program to Tanzania, where she worked with |
17 | | children who were victims of HIV/AIDS; as a student at the |
18 | | University of Michigan, she continued to learn about HIV/AIDS |
19 | | through course work and by volunteering at a local clinic; and
|
20 | | WHEREAS, Rachel Smylie later returned to Africa to study at |
21 | | the University of Cape Town in South Africa and planned to |
22 | | volunteer at an HIV/AIDS clinic there; she was traveling in |
|

1 | | Namibia with several other students when she passed away; and
|
2 | | WHEREAS, Rachel sang in the Oak Park-River Forest |
3 | | Children's Chorus throughout high school, performing in |
4 | | Carnegie Hall and going on several international tours, |
5 | | including to Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Morocco; she also |
6 | | traveled on several mission trips with the Fair Oaks |
7 | | Presbyterian Church youth group and played volleyball and |
8 | | lacrosse at Oak Park and River Forest High School; at the |
9 | | University of Michigan, where she was majoring in anthropology |
10 | | and English, she was a member of the Alpha Phi sorority and a |
11 | | volunteer at the Washtenaw County HIV/AIDS clinic; and
|
12 | | WHEREAS, Rachel Smylie was preceded in death by her |
13 | | grandparents, Melba and Connolly C. Gamble; and |
14 | | WHEREAS, Rachel Smylie is survived by her parents, Sallie |
15 | | and Mark Smylie; 2 sisters, Anna Smylie and Lauren Smylie Gage |
16 | | (Patrick); 4 aunts, Cathy Smylie McGehee (Read), Beth Smylie |
17 | | Puckett (Ben), Melanie G. Walker (Robert C.), and Rev. Susan |
18 | | Rainey Dankel; an uncle, Frank Raysor; 9 cousins, Eliza |
19 | | McGehee, Jane McGehee, Bonnie Puckett (Michael Levine), Andy |
20 | | Puckett (Emily), Rebecca Puckett McWilliams, Matt McWilliams, |
21 | | Sarah Puckett, Sara Walker, and Robert Walker; and |
22 | | grandparents, Elizabeth and James Smylie; therefore, be it

1 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL |
2 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with her |
3 | | family and friends, mourn the passing of Rachel G. Smylie; and |
4 | | be it further

5 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
6 | | presented to the family of Rachel Smylie as an expression of |
7 | | our sympathy.
