2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Arthur J. Lindsey of Wood River, who |
4 | | passed away on November 6, 2013; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Arthur Lindsey was born on July 11, 1922 in |
6 | | Jonesboro to Ada Mae (nee Barker) and William Arthur Lindsey; |
7 | | he attended a one-room school house in Union County for his |
8 | | primary education; he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps at |
9 | | age 16 and helped construct various infrastructure projects, |
10 | | such as Giant City State Park in Southern Illinois; he received |
11 | | his General Education Diploma from East Alton-Wood River High |
12 | | School; and
|
13 | | WHEREAS, Arthur Lindsey moved to the Alton area in 1940 and |
14 | | worked as a delivery boy for local grocers, florists, and dry |
15 | | cleaners; he married Dorothy Didway in Ramsey on January 1, |
16 | | 1942; he joined the United States Army on December 15, 1942 and |
17 | | served in Company A of the 52nd Engineering Battalion; he |
18 | | served in the South Pacific Theater during World War II; he was |
19 | | on a landing craft alongside the USS Missouri when the Japanese |
20 | | surrendered and he became one of the first 50 U.S. soldiers to |
21 | | occupy Japan at the end of the war; and

22 | | WHEREAS, Arthur Lindsey returned to Alton following World |

1 | | War II and worked as a car salesman for Carter Ford in Wood |
2 | | River, Barnett Volkswagon in Alton, Stuart Motors in Wood |
3 | | River, and was a partner at Ellege Auto Sales in East Alton; he |
4 | | opened his own insurance agency in 1965 through American Family |
5 | | Insurance and in 1970, he was elected Superintendent of |
6 | | Veterans Assistance Commission of Madison County, serving |
7 | | until his retirement in 1989; during his tenure as |
8 | | Superintendent, he was one of the founding members of the |
9 | | Illinois Association of County Veterans Assistant Commissions, |
10 | | serving for a time as President; and
|
11 | | WHEREAS, Arthur Lindsey was a life member and Past |
12 | | Commander of the American Legion Post #204, Past 22nd District |
13 | | Commander of the American Legion, member of the Veterans of |
14 | | Foreign Wars Post 2859, member of AmVets - Disabled American |
15 | | Veterans Chapter 90, and a member of the Forty and Eight; he |
16 | | served on the Illinois Veterans Home Advisory Board and spent |
17 | | many hours volunteering at the John Cochran and Jefferson |
18 | | Barracks Divisions with the Veterans Administration St. Louis |
19 | | Health Care System; and
|
20 | | WHEREAS, Arthur Lindsey was a member of First Christian |
21 | | Church of Wood River; he served as President of the Lincoln |
22 | | School Parent-Teacher Organization in 1959 and as a Charter |
23 | | Organization Representative for Boy Scout Troop #35 for many |
24 | | years; and |

1 | | WHEREAS, Arthur Lindsey was preceded in death by his wife, |
2 | | Dorothy; his siblings, Bill Barker, Claude (Betty) Lindsey, |
3 | | Marie (Vernie) Anderson, Thelma (Darrel) Hileman, Bernice |
4 | | (Edward) Obert, and an infant brother; his in-laws, Dean and |
5 | | Mary Grissom, Frank Morris, and Irene Didway; his nephew, Tommy |
6 | | Potter; and his granddaughter, Gwendolyn May Sorega; and |
7 | | WHEREAS, Arthur Lindsey is survived by his daughter, Sheila |
8 | | May (nee Lindsey) Sorega; his son, Kevin Arthur (Susan) |
9 | | Lindsey; his grandchildren, Todd (Tracey) Sorega, Tiffany Dawn |
10 | | Sorega, Ryan Howard Lindsey, and Shannon Marie Lindsey; his |
11 | | great-grandchildren, Donavin, Dylan, and Dawson Klunk; and |
12 | | many nieces and nephews; therefore, be it

13 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL |
14 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
15 | | Arthur J. Lindsey, and extend our sincere condolences to his |
16 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it |
17 | | further

18 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
19 | | presented to the family of Arthur Lindsey as an expression of |
20 | | our deepest sympathy.
