|
2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of former State Senator Beverly J. Fawell of |
4 | | Glen Ellyn, who passed away on June 22, 2013; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Beverly (nee Landon) Fawell was born in Oak Park |
6 | | and graduated from Oak Park High School; she earned her |
7 | | bachelors degree from Elmhurst College, majoring in Business |
8 | | Administration and Elementary Education; she did her graduate |
9 | | studies in Political Science at Northern Illinois University; |
10 | | she married Bruce Fawell; and
|
11 | | WHEREAS, Beverly Fawell worked as a teacher in West |
12 | | Chicago; and
|
13 | | WHEREAS, Beverly Fawell served the people of the 20th |
14 | | Illinois State Senate District from 1983 to 1999; she had |
15 | | previously served as State Representative of the Illinois 41st |
16 | | District; while in office, she was known as an advocate for |
17 | | education, transportation, seniors, children, and the |
18 | | disadvantaged; and
|
19 | | WHEREAS, Beverly Fawell was a tireless supporter of |
20 | | education while in office and for the rights of community |
21 | | colleges to have a voice in how they are operated; she never |
|

1 | | stopped advocating for school districts to achieve more |
2 | | flexibility regarding State mandates; and |
3 | | WHEREAS, Beverly Fawell championed social and health |
4 | | concerns; she strived to expand elder care options in the State |
5 | | and helped institute criminal background checks for health care |
6 | | workers; and |
7 | | WHEREAS, Beverly Fawell was nationally recognized with the |
8 | | Public Policy Pioneer award by the Assisted Living Federation |
9 | | of America for her efforts in bringing more assisted living |
10 | | options to Illinois; and |
11 | | WHEREAS, Beverly Fawell served as Chairman of the Senate |
12 | | Transportation Committee and as a member of the Appropriations |
13 | | and Revenue Committees; she fought to improve Illinois roadways |
14 | | without increasing the gas tax; she advocated for the State to |
15 | | receive its fair share of the funds that it sends to the |
16 | | federal government for roadways; and |
17 | | WHEREAS, Beverly Fawell sponsored a law to create a |
18 | | 3-tiered licensing system for teen drivers so that they could |
19 | | have more time to learn safe driving skills; and |
20 | | WHEREAS, Beverly Fawell always realized the importance of |
21 | | home and family; she sponsored legislation to assist with |

1 | | adoption, to allow for equitable divorce proceedings, and to |
2 | | give fathers the same rights as mothers; and |
3 | | WHEREAS, Beverly Fawell was always active in DuPage County |
4 | | politics and government; she was a Republican Committeeman in |
5 | | DuPage County since 1956 and a Milton Township Committeeman for |
6 | | Precinct 17; she was in the Glen Ellyn Republican Women's Club, |
7 | | the Dupage Federation of Republican Women's Club, and served as |
8 | | DuPage County Chairman for many national, State, and local |
9 | | political candidates; and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, Beverly Fawell was praised with hundreds of honors |
11 | | while in the Illinois General Assembly; she received the
1999 |
12 | | Legislator of the Year Award from the Illinois Association for |
13 | | Marriage and Family Therapy; the 1999
Legislative Excellence |
14 | | Award from the American Association of Retired Persons; the |
15 | | 1999 Merritt Grim
Award from Senior Home Share; the 1998 |
16 | | Distinguished Service Award from the Safe Harbor Children's |
17 | | Waiting
Room; the 1998 Legislator of Year Award from the |
18 | | Community Behavioral Healthcare Association; the 1998

19 | | Outstanding Leadership Award from the Illinois Association of |
20 | | Park Districts; the 1997 Certificate of

18 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL |
19 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
20 | | former State Senator Beverly J. Fawell, and extend our sincere |
21 | | condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved |
22 | | her; and be it further
