2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Gerald C. "Jerry" Stapel of Toulon, who | ||||||
4 | passed away on May 6, 2013; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Gerald Stapel was born on May 7, 1928, in | ||||||
6 | Phillips, Wisconsin, to Frederick and Charlotte Kasper Stapel; | ||||||
7 | he entered the U.S. Army in December 1950 and served with the | ||||||
8 | 7th Infantry Division in Korea during 1951 and 1952; he was | ||||||
9 | awarded the Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars and the | ||||||
10 | United States Service Medal; he married Audrey Gerard on March | ||||||
11 | 29, 1954, in Kewanee; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Gerald Stapel graduated from the Illinois School | ||||||
13 | of Banking at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and | ||||||
14 | from the School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin at | ||||||
15 | Madison and began working at State Bank of Toulon as a | ||||||
16 | bookkeeper in 1953; he became assistant cashier in 1958 and was | ||||||
17 | elected to the board of directors and presidency in 1970; he | ||||||
18 | retired from the bank in 1990, but continued as a member of the | ||||||
19 | board of directors until 2000; and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, Gerald Stapel was a member and past president of | ||||||
21 | the Toulon VFW Post #8825 and a member of the Toulon American | ||||||
22 | Legion Post #416; he attended the Toulon United Methodist |

1 | Church; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Gerald Stapel liked to give back to his community | ||||||
3 | and was part of several civic organizations; he was one of the | ||||||
4 | organizers of the Stark County Health Center and Sunshine | ||||||
5 | Village; he was active in the Old Settlers' Association where | ||||||
6 | he was co-chairman of Toulon's 150th anniversary celebration; | ||||||
7 | he served on the board of Kewanee Hospital and the Black Hawk | ||||||
8 | East Foundation; he was past president of the Toulon Grade | ||||||
9 | School Board of Education, the Toulon Chamber of Commerce, and | ||||||
10 | the Toulon Lions Club; he served 17 years as Toulon City Clerk | ||||||
11 | and was Treasurer of the Stark County Republican Central | ||||||
12 | Committee; and | ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Gerald Stapel was inducted into the Black Hawk | ||||||
14 | East Wall of Fame in September 1998; he enjoyed spending time | ||||||
15 | with his grandchildren and going to the NCAA Final Four | ||||||
16 | basketball games with his son and grandsons for many years; and | ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Gerald Stapel was preceded in death by his | ||||||
18 | parents; his brothers, Edmond, Don, and Willie Stapel; and his | ||||||
19 | sister, Virginia King; and

20 | WHEREAS, Gerald Stapel is survived by his wife, Audrey; his | ||||||
21 | son, Jerry J. (Cindy) Stapel; his grandchildren, Christopher, | ||||||
22 | Jonathan (Mary), and Bethany Stapel; his great-granddaughter, |

1 | Anna Bryn Stapel; his brother, Fred Stapel; his sister, June | ||||||
2 | (Irvin) Lampson; and his brother-in-law, Orville King; | ||||||
3 | therefore, be it

4 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL | ||||||
5 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
6 | Gerald C. Stapel, and extend our sincere condolences to his | ||||||
7 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
8 | further

9 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
10 | presented to the family of Gerald Stapel as an expression of | ||||||
11 | our deepest sympathy.
