2 | | WHEREAS, Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a complex |
3 | | neurological motor-planning disorder often accompanied by |
4 | | other special needs and is among the most severe of speech and |
5 | | communication problems; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, Children affected by CAS have extreme difficulty |
7 | | planning and producing the precise, highly refined, and |
8 | | specific series of movements of the tongue, lips, jaw, and |
9 | | palate that are necessary in producing clear, intelligible |
10 | | speech; and
|
11 | | WHEREAS, While the act of learning to speak comes |
12 | | effortlessly to most children, those with apraxia require years |
13 | | of intensive speech therapy and have lengthy struggles to |
14 | | communicate; although not life-threatening, the disorder is |
15 | | life-altering, as families are left to cope with the emotional, |
16 | | physical, and financial challenges of having a child diagnosed |
17 | | with CAS; and

18 | | WHEREAS, The Apraxia Connection and Silent Stars |
19 | | Foundation, along with the national organization Childhood |
20 | | Apraxia of Speech of North America, are part of a local, state, |
21 | | and national effort to bring awareness of this disorder; |
