| 1 | AMENDMENT TO SENATE RESOLUTION 172

| 2 | AMENDMENT NO. ___. Amend Senate Resolution 172 by replacing | ||||||
| 3 | everything after the heading with the following:
| ||||||
| 4 | "WHEREAS, The United States Postal Service recently | ||||||
| 5 | announced plans to reduce delivery service from six days a week | ||||||
| 6 | to five days a week, beginning in August of 2013; and
| ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, American businesses, organizations, and citizens | ||||||
| 8 | have depended on six-day mail service for the timely delivery | ||||||
| 9 | of important documents since 1912; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, Eliminating Saturday delivery would affect most | ||||||
| 11 | Americans, but particularly rural residents, senior citizens, | ||||||
| 12 | small businesses, and working families who rely on the postal | ||||||
| 13 | service for receipt of their paychecks; and
| ||||||
| 14 | WHEREAS, The reduction in service would inevitably create a | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | backlog of undelivered mail, as postal workers would have fewer | ||||||
| 2 | days in which to handle the same amount of mail; and
| ||||||
| 3 | WHEREAS, This backlog would delay mail delivery or increase | ||||||
| 4 | the cost of postal service, as postal employees work overtime | ||||||
| 5 | hours to ensure timely delivery of the mail; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 6 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL | ||||||
| 7 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we support the decision | ||||||
| 8 | of the United States Congress, in recognition of the Postal | ||||||
| 9 | Service's duty to operate in the public interest, to require it | ||||||
| 10 | to maintain its current delivery schedule; and be it further
| ||||||
| 11 | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | ||||||
| 12 | delivered to the United States Postmaster General and each | ||||||
| 13 | member of the Illinois congressional delegation.". | ||||||
