2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Arthur Greenberg of Peoria, who passed |
4 | | away on January 21, 2013; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Arthur Greenberg was born on July 31, 1929, in |
6 | | Chicago; his parents were Irving and Dorothy Gordon Greenberg; |
7 | | he married Bonnie Mosiman on February 9, 1994, in Peoria; and
|
8 | | WHEREAS, Arthur Greenberg was a graduate of the University |
9 | | of Illinois and the University of Michigan Law School in Ann |
10 | | Arbor; and
|
11 | | WHEREAS, Arthur Greenberg served his country as a member of |
12 | | the United States Navy during the Korean War; and
|
13 | | WHEREAS, Arthur Greenberg was a noted attorney in the |
14 | | Peoria area for many years, engaging in the practice of law |
15 | | from 1957 to 1978, 1982 to 1997, 1999, and 2000; he also served |
16 | | as a resident circuit judge in the Illinois Tenth Judicial |
17 | | Circuit in Peoria County (1997-1998), commissioner on the |
18 | | Inquiry Board of the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary |
19 | | Commission (1997), assistant state's attorney in Peoria County |
20 | | (1960 and 1962), and special prosecutor and receiver in special |
21 | | cases; he was licensed to practice law in all local federal |

1 | | courts, the State of Illinois, the State of Michigan, and |
2 | | before the United States Supreme Court; and
|
3 | | WHEREAS, Arthur Greenberg served as president of the Peoria |
4 | | County Bar Association (1992-1993), the Standing Committee on |
5 | | Illinois Bar Journal Editorial Board (2005-2006) and the |
6 | | Illinois Central College Justice Advisory Board (2005-2011); |
7 | | he served as general counsel and director of Planning and |
8 | | Development for the Peoria Journal Star Inc. (PJS) and its |
9 | | subsidiaries in both publishing and broadcasting; he served as |
10 | | vice president and operating officer of Compass Systems Inc., a |
11 | | communications, research, and development corporation based in |
12 | | Peoria and a subsidiary of PJS (1979-1981); he also worked for |
13 | | Continental Assurance Company of Chicago; and
|
14 | | WHEREAS, Arthur Greenberg served as a Distinguished |
15 | | Lecturer in Business and Criminal Justice at Eureka College |
16 | | (2000 to 2011); he was a lecturer at the University of Illinois |
17 | | School of Medicine in Peoria (1973-1974) and Bradley |
18 | | University, serving as adjunct instructor of numerous courses, |
19 | | and the Illinois Bar Association Institute of Continuing |
20 | | Education (1963-1972); he lectured or spoke at numerous |
21 | | educational institutions, business, and social organizations |
22 | | and citizen groups, frequently appearing on both television and |
23 | | radio, speaking on such diverse subjects as law, social |
24 | | problems, art, and music; he was also involved in the Lawyers |

1 | | Constitutional Defense Committee, participating in civil |
2 | | rights and legal activities in the South during "Freedom |
3 | | Summer" in 1964; and |
4 | | WHEREAS, Arthur Greenberg was a member of the American Bar |
5 | | Association, the Illinois Bar Association, the Illinois Judges |
6 | | Association, the Peoria County Bar Association, the Chicago Bar |
7 | | Association, the State Bar of Michigan, the National Legal Aid |
8 | | and Defender Association, and many other professional and legal |
9 | | organizations; and |
10 | | WHEREAS, Arthur Greenberg served with the Board of |
11 | | Directors of the Central Illinois Private Industry Council |
12 | | (1990-1997), the Rotary Club of Peoria, the Peoria Housing |
13 | | Authority (1986-1989), the Liquor Commission of the City of |
14 | | Peoria (1982-1986), the Creve Coeur Club, the Board of Trustees |
15 | | of the Universalist Unitarian Church of Peoria (1988-1989, |
16 | | 1992-1993, 1999-2002), the Bradley University Committee for |
17 | | the Use of Animals for the Subject of Research (1989-1997), the |
18 | | American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the |
19 | | Board of Directors of Peoria City Beautiful (1981-1987), the |
20 | | Child Abuse Advisory Council, the Board of Directors of the |
21 | | Fayette Companies, the parent corporation of the Human Service |
22 | | Center (1981-1992), the Board of Directors of the Human Service |
23 | | Center Foundation (1992-1996), the Board of Directors of the |
24 | | Human Service Center (1976-1980, 1982-1991), the Board of |

16 | | Urban Renewal Advisory Committee (1972-1974), the Citizens |
17 | | Advisory Council for Community Improvement, the Minority |
18 | | Housing Group and Relocation Committee (1967-1969), and the |
19 | | American Civil Liberties Union (1963-1965, 1967-1968, |
20 | | 1982-1983); he also investigated urban problems in Trenton and |
21 | | Newark, New Jersey, in the summer of 1968; and |
22 | | WHEREAS, Arthur Greenberg was a photographer who exhibited |
23 | | his photography, most recently at the National Archives in |
24 | | Washington, D.C. (1999-2001), and lectured on photographic |
25 | | subjects at numerous galleries and educational institutions |

1 | | throughout the United States; in 1973 he participated in |
2 | | "Documerica", an historic documentary project for the federal |
3 | | government; he also studied with some of the photographic |
4 | | masters of the 20th century, including Minor White, Paul |
5 | | Caponigro, and Ruth Bernhard; and |
6 | | WHEREAS, Arthur Greenberg was a member of the Universalist |
7 | | Unitarian Church in Peoria and Congregation Anshai Emeth in |
8 | | Peoria; and |
9 | | WHEREAS, Arthur Greenberg received numerous honors and |
10 | | awards, including the Helen Cleaver Distinguished Teaching |
11 | | Award at Eureka College; and |
12 | | WHEREAS, Arthur Greenberg was preceded in death by his |
13 | | parents and his granddaughter, Leah Dunavan; and |
14 | | WHEREAS, Arthur Greenberg is survived by his wife, Bonnie; |
15 | | his children, Dean Greenberg and Nina Dunavan; his grandson, |
16 | | Abraham Traverso; his great-grandson, Mateo Traverso; and his |
17 | | sister, Nancy Plotkin; therefore, be it

18 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL |
19 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with |
20 | | his family and friends, the passing of Arthur Greenberg; and be |
