SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 56

(As Amended by Senate Amendment No. 1)

  
 
3    WHEREAS, Honoring our nation's and State's Vietnam 
4veterans is an appropriate measure, given their selfless acts 
5of courage in the face of adversity and uncertainty and their 
6willingness to serve their country when called upon; their 
7bravery and sacrifice should not be forgotten; and
  
 
8    WHEREAS, The Vietnam War lasted from 1964 to 1975, making 
9it the United States' second-longest war; the war required the 
109.2 million Americans who served in the military throughout the 
11war's duration to perform at sustained tempos of intensity and 
12professionalism in all facets of military operations; and
  
 
13    WHEREAS, Nearly 2.7 million Americans served in Vietnam 
14throughout the war, facing countless challenges in an 
15unfamiliar environment where struggle was the norm; servicemen 
16and women were called upon to serve thousands of miles away 
17from home; and
  
 
18    WHEREAS, 58,286 American military personnel paid the 
19ultimate sacrifice by giving their lives for their country and 
20their fellow soldiers, marines, sailors, and airmen; and

  
 
21    WHEREAS, It is highly fitting that the Illinois General

1Assembly pays honor and respect to those truly exceptional 
2individuals who served our nation in Vietnam and, in doing so, 
3have gone above and beyond the call of duty by making 
4sacrifices so that their fellow Americans and Illinoisans could 
5live the lives promised by the United States Constitution; 
6therefore, be it
  
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL 
8ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES 
9CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the portion of Interstate 
1080 between Interstate 57 and Interstate 355 as the Vietnam 
11Veterans Memorial Parkway; and be it further
  
 
12    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation 
13is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with 
14State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs 
15giving notice of the name of Vietnam Veterans Memorial Parkway; 
16and be it further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
18delivered to the Secretary of the Illinois Department of 
19Transportation.
