|
2 | | WHEREAS, State Representative Monique D. Davis and the |
3 | | members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to |
4 | | congratulate the staff and administration of Chicago State |
5 | | University for the establishment and ribbon-cutting of the |
6 | | Global Institute of Sustainable Development and for the |
7 | | inauguration of the Institute's Africa Center, microfinance |
8 | | initiative, and Global Africa Partnership Forum; and
|
9 | | WHEREAS, The Global Institute of Sustainable Development |
10 | | was established as an ambitious problem-solving innovation to |
11 | | further the university's global citizenship mission, with |
12 | | particular interest in utilizing sustainability principles to |
13 | | stimulate university/community partnerships for cross-cultural |
14 | | exchange; the Institute also utilizes faculty/student |
15 | | interaction outside the classroom in order to promote community |
16 | | engagement in research and service learning in the age of |
17 | | globalization; and

18 | | WHEREAS, In an intellectually-charged and research-driven |
19 | | setting, the Global Institute of Sustainable Development |
20 | | challenges students to achieve academic excellence and |
21 | | innovation, promotes international cooperation for sustainable |
22 | | development of humans and environments through global social |
23 | | justice, leadership, and entrepreneurship, and strives to |

1 | | produce informed and effective global citizens; and

2 | | WHEREAS, The Global Institute of Sustainable Development |
3 | | has established the Africa Center to enhance |
4 | | geographically-targeted and thematic research in Africa, |
5 | | stimulate professional development, highlight the contribution |
6 | | of Africans and the African diaspora to global development, |
7 | | inspire mutually beneficial cross-cultural exchange, and |
8 | | promote service learning; and |
9 | | WHEREAS, The Microfinance Center, an initiative of the |
10 | | Global Institute of Sustainable Development supported by PNC |
11 | | Bank, aims to stimulate leadership skills, financial |
12 | | education, and entrepreneurship in a practical learning |
13 | | approach that breaks generational dependency while also |
14 | | alleviating poverty among Chicago State University students |
15 | | and surrounding communities; the program seeks to empower |
16 | | future leaders to take control of their economic conditions by |
17 | | starting actions that would reshape and transform their |
18 | | financial future and break the cycle of poverty for future |
19 | | generations; by building a solid financial future, prospective |
20 | | student entrepreneurs build self-confidence and become |
21 | | responsible economic citizens that change adversarial history |
22 | | to chart a successful course for their communities and the |
23 | | global society at large; and

1 | | WHEREAS, The timely inauguration of the "Global Africa |
2 | | Partnership Forum", with the theme "Building Global |
3 | | Partnership for African Leadership and Sustainable |
4 | | Development", represents a step in the right direction to |
5 | | further discussions to enhance capacity-building for United |
6 | | States-Africa partnerships; the forum seeks to address |
7 | | pertinent issues of how to leverage international resources for |
8 | | leadership and development in Africa and engages the |
9 | | University's internal and external stakeholders, including, |
10 | | but not limited to, faculty, students, entrepreneurs, |
11 | | corporations, faith-based and community organizations, |
12 | | policymakers, researchers, public intellectuals, and the |
13 | | general citizenry in a dynamic discourse and debate about the |
14 | | broad issues surrounding the role of university-community |
15 | | partnerships and the wider African diaspora can play in |
16 | | building strong leadership and sustainable development for |
17 | | Africa; the forum goes beyond talk to match resources to |
18 | | identified needs and expose African resources to potential |
19 | | foreign investors; therefore, be it

21 | | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
