2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives are pleased to congratulate Dr. Marcia Young on |
4 | | the occasion of her retirement as superintendent for the David |
5 | | Davis Mansion State Historic Site; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Young has played a significant role in the |
7 | | enhancement of the quality of life for McLean County residents; |
8 | | as superintendent for David Davis Mansion State Historic Site, |
9 | | she has helped to bring the world to the mansion's doorstep for |
10 | | 24 years; and
|
11 | | WHEREAS, Prior to joining the staff of the Illinois |
12 | | Historic Preservation Agency in 1990, Dr. Young served as the |
13 | | last director of the University Museums at Illinois State |
14 | | University in the late 1980s; during her tenure, she helped |
15 | | foster a new era in museum programming, marketing, and |
16 | | collections management; and
|
17 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Young helped oversee the restoration of Clover |
18 | | Lawn - known today as the David Davis Mansion, and has helped |
19 | | staff and volunteers survive and thrive, even during times of |
20 | | reduced funding; and |
21 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Young has undertaken numerous collaborations |

1 | | with area schools, other museums, and various organizations to |
2 | | design outstanding programs that offer quality educational |
3 | | programs and entertaining views of history for all ages; and |
4 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Young has encouraged and facilitated the |
5 | | development of numerous special programs and events designed to |
6 | | expand area tourism and support the fund-raising efforts of the |
7 | | non-profit David Davis Mansion Foundation; thousands of |
8 | | visitors have enjoyed such annual events as Christmas at the |
9 | | Mansions, the Bountiful Feast, Civil War Days, presentations by |
10 | | the Tea Ladies, and the Glorious Garden Walk; and |
11 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Young's support of the efforts to reclaim and |
12 | | interpret Sarah's Garden on the grounds of the Davis Mansion |
13 | | has resulted in a lasting partnership with McLean County Master |
14 | | Gardeners and honors for the heirloom garden; and |
15 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Young has helped local residents and visitors |
16 | | appreciate the important role Judge David Davis played in |
17 | | Abraham Lincoln's life and his rise to the presidency; under |
18 | | her leadership, the story of the Davis Mansion has also been |
19 | | greatly expanded to share stories about Sarah Davis and others |
20 | | who lived and worked in this remarkable Victorian-era home; and |
21 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Young has been affiliated with the Looking for |
22 | | Lincoln Heritage Coalition for more than 10 years; she served |

1 | | as board chairman, and helped oversee the establishment of the |
2 | | Abraham Lincoln National Heritage Area; and |
3 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Young is a past-President of the Illinois |
4 | | Association of Museums; she also served on the Abraham Lincoln |
5 | | Bicentennial Commission of McLean County and is a board member |
6 | | for the Heritage Association of McLean County; and
|
7 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Young is a respected educator and has taught |
8 | | courses and conducted workshops for students of all ages since |
9 | | she arrived in Bloomington in 1970; she has mentored countless |
10 | | interns from area universities, and generously assisted |
11 | | scholars, authors, and documentary filmmakers seeking |
12 | | information about the Davis family, Clover Lawn, and life in |
13 | | nineteenth-century America; and
|
14 | | WHEREAS, As Dr. Marcia Young retires from her long-time |
15 | | position with the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, she |
16 | | plans to continue her volunteer service with the Davis Mansion |
17 | | Foundation and several other related organizations; her |
18 | | knowledge and enthusiasm have been invaluable, her leadership |
19 | | has been steadfast, and countless people have benefited from |
20 | | her unwavering dedication; therefore, be it
