2 | | WHEREAS, Someone develops Alzheimer's disease every 68 |
3 | | seconds; that number will increase to every 33 seconds by 2050; |
4 | | and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is on the rise, with more than |
6 | | 5.2 million Americans of all ages currently living with the |
7 | | disease; and
|
8 | | WHEREAS, Over $140 billion is spent on Alzheimer's disease |
9 | | every year through Medicare and Medicaid; that number will rise |
10 | | to $1.2 trillion in 2050; and
|
11 | | WHEREAS, Currently, over 210,000 people in Illinois live |
12 | | with the disease; there will be an estimated 14% increase in |
13 | | the next 11 years; and
|
14 | | WHEREAS, The Alzheimer's Association and the Centers for |
15 | | Disease Prevention's Healthy Aging Program have developed a |
16 | | Road Map to advance cognitive health as a vital, integral |
17 | | component of public health; and
|
18 | | WHEREAS, The Illinois Public Health Association and the |
19 | | Alzheimer's Association issue a call to action for an effective |
20 | | coordinated approach to moving cognitive health into public |

1 | | health practice and developing partnerships and assuring a |
2 | | competent workforce; and
|
3 | | WHEREAS, The impact of Alzheimer's and other dementia on |
4 | | Illinois families, the health care system, and society as a |
5 | | whole is of great importance; the need for home and |
6 | | community-based services for those with Alzheimer's is on the |
7 | | rise and caregiver stress is at an all-time high; and
|
8 | | WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is a looming public health |
9 | | crisis and the need to address cognitive health and to meet the |
10 | | needs of caregivers is growing daily; we call upon policymakers |
11 | | to join in the efforts to raise awareness, promote cognitive |
12 | | functioning and help meet the needs of caregivers and to |
13 | | acknowledge the hundreds of thousands of persons with |
14 | | Alzheimer's and other dementia in Illinois, their families, and |
15 | | caregivers; and
|
16 | | WHEREAS, On April 2, 2014, Alzheimer's and public health |
17 | | advocates will speak up for the needs and rights of persons |
18 | | with cognitive impairment; these advocates ask the Illinois |
19 | | General Assembly to make Alzheimer's disease a priority public |
20 | | health issue in the State; therefore, be it
