2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representative are pleased to recognize the citizens of the |
4 | | City of Wamac on the occasion of the city's 100th anniversary |
5 | | on July 5, 2013; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, The City of Wamac was initially organized as a |
7 | | village on July 5, 1913 and was incorporated into a city on |
8 | | July 25, 1913; Mr. A.P. Bindham had the honor of naming the new |
9 | | city and derived the name from the first letter of each of the |
10 | | three counties bordering the city: "WA" for Washington County, |
11 | | "MA" for Marion County, and "C" for Clinton County; and
|
12 | | WHEREAS, The first Wamac City Hall was built in 1918 on |
13 | | Center Street; in 1979, the city's offices were moved to a |
14 | | building at 361 East 17th Street; in April of 2011, the |
15 | | building faced high winds that removed a portion of the |
16 | | building, causing damage to the roof; the damage was so great |
17 | | that plans for a new building went underway; on April 15, 2013, |
18 | | the city's offices were moved to their new location at 100 |
19 | | South Wabash Avenue; and

20 | | WHEREAS, The population of the City of Wamac is 1,185; the |
21 | | City of Wamac is known for being the location of the first vote |
22 | | cast by a woman in Illinois, as well as for the No. 5 Coal Mine |
