HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to affirm their affection for the City of Chicago, a world-renowned, international travel destination for millions; and

WHEREAS, The name "Chicago" is forever linked with world-famous sports teams and international superstars in the sports of baseball, basketball, football, hockey, and soccer; and

WHEREAS, Chicago is the transportation center of North America, with unique outreach capabilities for its people, employers, manufacturers, and distributors, by road, rail, water, and air; and

WHEREAS, Chicago's geography is unique; it is the largest city in the world with a panorama of fresh water, allowing its residents to partake in countless recreational activities along the lakefront; and

WHEREAS, Chicago's downtown has the largest cluster of super-tall buildings in the Western Hemisphere, each one taller than 1,000 feet; and

WHEREAS, Chicago's culture is highly oriented towards neighborhoods, churches, parishes, and geographical settings; it is an example of the kind of metropolitan city that young adults are flocking to and learning how to live in when they are undergoing higher education and in their early professional years afterwards; and

WHEREAS, Chicago has many colleges and universities; the City Colleges of Chicago, Chicago's largest institution of higher education by headcount, currently has 120,000 students; tens of thousands of additional students attend other public and private colleges and universities in and around the city; and

WHEREAS, The foremost U.S. university in connection with the Nobel Prize is the University of Chicago, with 87 scholars who are affiliated with the university winning this supreme career award; only one other university in the world, Cambridge University in England, surpasses the University of Chicago; and

WHEREAS, Chicago area schools such as Northwestern University, the University of Chicago, an internationally recognized institution, and the University of Illinois, in conjunction with other universities, are joining together to create a network of technological incubation centers throughout Chicago; these centers, when combined with the expertise commanded by leaders at these institutions, will create jobs and a bright future for the midwest; and

WHEREAS, Chicago is a world-class city that attracts the best and brightest to work and live and it boasts a plethora of sports, entertainment, and culture that compares to any city in the world; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we affirm our affection for the City of Chicago; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the mayor of Chicago Rahm Emanuel.
