HOUSE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3Representatives wish to honor  Marilyn J. Schnell for her 25 
4years of service as a Downers Grove Village Council 
5Commissioner; and
  
 
6    WHEREAS, Marilyn Schnell earned her bachelor's degree with 
7honors in history from Queens College and attended Cornell 
8University's Graduate School of Rural Sociology; and
  
 
9    WHEREAS, Marilyn Schnell taught computer science and 
10statistical analysis at Cornell University; she established a 
11computer curriculum at Warwick High School in Rhode Island and 
12acted as a computer liaison at the College of DuPage; she also 
13served as a computer consultant to small businesses; and
  
 
14    WHEREAS, Marilyn Schnell was appointed to serve on the 
15Downers Grove Village Council in 1988; she is currently serving 
16in her 5th term; during her tenure on the Council, she has 
17served on many ad-hoc committees and worked on many issues, 
18including revisions to the zoning ordinance, wetland 
19preservation, residential redevelopment, and improvement of 
20traffic conditions around the high schools; she was also 
21instrumental in helping to bring the DARE program to Downers 
22Grove and was an active participant in the Total Community

1Development II program; and
  
 
2    WHEREAS, Marilyn Schnell served on the Plan Commission from 
31980 to 1988; she also served as liaison to the Zoning 
4Commission from 1982 to 1988 and was the Mayor Pro-Tempore 
5between 1994 and 1999; prior to moving to Downers Grove in 
61980, she served on the Wheaton Housing Commission for over 6 
7years; and
  
 
8    WHEREAS, Marilyn Schnell has been an active member of many 
9community and service organizations, including Helping Girls 
10Navigate Adolescence, the Character Counts Coalition, Pancake 
11Breakfast, St. Mary of Gostyn Church, the Finance Committee and 
12board of trustees of Marmion Academy, the Parents Board of 
13Lawrence University, the District 58 Strategic Planning 
14Committee, the Highland School PTA, the Herrick PTA, the DuPage 
15Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the DuPage Mayors and 
16Managers Legislative Committee; and
  
 
17    WHEREAS, Marilyn Schnell was a recipient of the Rotary 
18Club's Paul Harris Fellow Award for Community Service and has 
19been recognized by Family Shelter Services for service to the 
20community; and
  
 
21    WHEREAS, Marilyn Schnell and her loving husband, Philip, 
22were married on March 27, 1967; together, they have 2 children,

1Carrie (Charles) and Andrew (Lacey), and a dog, Payton; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Marilyn Schnell was honored for her service with 
3an event in her honor on May 7, 2013 at Gatto's Restaurant and 
4Bar in Downers Grove; therefore, be it
  
 
5    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
6NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 
7we congratulate honor  Marilyn J. Schnell for her 25 years of 
8service as a Downers Grove Village Council Commissioner and 
9wish her continued success and happiness in the future; and be 
10it further
  
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
12presented to Marilyn Schnell as a symbol of our esteem and 
13respect.
