SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Reverend J. Robert Sandman of Oak Brook,
4who passed away on January 16, 2012; and
 
5    WHEREAS, He was a retired United Church of Christ minister;
6he grew up in Newport, Kentucky; after graduation from Oberlin
7College in Ohio, Union Theological Seminary in New York, and
8receiving a Doctor of Ministry Degree from United Seminary in
9Dayton, Ohio, Reverend Sandman served as Migrant Ministry state
10director and pastor of a Columbus, Ohio church; and
 
11    WHEREAS, He later worked in United Church of Christ
12denominational administration, retiring in 1992 as Associate
13Conference Minister in the Illinois Conference; he dedicated
14his life to service and justice ministries such as civil
15rights, anti-Vietnam War marches, new church ministries for
16immigrant minority communities, and farmworker labor rights;
17and
 
18    WHEREAS, He marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in
19civil rights demonstrations and befriended Cesar Chavez; he
20worked with the Migrant Ministry and the National Farm Worker
21Ministry; and

1    WHEREAS, After retiring he and his wife spent a year of
2volunteer work in Istanbul, Turkey, among Iraqi, Iranian, and
3Bosnian refugees, plus hundreds of African economic migrants;
4and
 
5    WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his son, Richard A.
6Sandman; and his grandson, Nicholas Sandman; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Reverend J. Robert Sandman is survived by his
8wife, Olgha Sierra Sandman; his sons, Robert D. Sandman (Kathy)
9and Rodney P. Sandman (Karin); his daughter, Linda E. Sandman
10(Richard Wheelock); his 8 grandchildren; and his 2
11great-grandchildren; therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
14his family and friends, the passing of Reverend J. Robert
15Sandman; and be it further
 
16    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17presented to the family of Reverend J. Robert Sandman as a
18symbol of our sincere sympathy.
