2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of William Henry Schroeder of Long Lake, who |
4 | | passed away on December 17, 2011; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, He was born in Libertyville on February 28, 1929, |
6 | | the son of the late Lydia and Marshall Schroeder; and
|
7 | | WHEREAS, He graduated from the University of Illinois, |
8 | | Urbana-Champaign and was staff sergeant in the United States |
9 | | Army during the Korean War; William; with his father, Marshall |
10 | | R. Schroeder, founded Lakeland Newspapers in 1956 and was a |
11 | | charter member of the Suburban Press Foundation (SPF), |
12 | | predecessor to the Suburban Newspapers of America; he was |
13 | | president of the Illinois Press Association (IPA), the largest |
14 | | State newspaper group in the country; and
|
15 | | WHEREAS, He organized and began the Illinois Press |
16 | | Foundation (IPF), a committee comprised of former IPA |
17 | | presidents who helped solidify the organization in the area of |
18 | | endowments and support services for the newspaper industry; he |
19 | | was also involved with the Suburban Newspapers of America; he |
20 | | was recognized for numerous journalism accomplishments during |
21 | | his 55-year newspaper career; he received the Illinois Press |
22 | | Association's "Best in State" newspapers honors 3 times and |
|

1 | | also won the 2002 CHINFO award for the best military newspaper |
2 | | in the world; he also helped locate and finance the Illinois |
3 | | Press Association's headquarters in Springfield; and
|
4 | | WHEREAS, He was the winner of the 2003 SNA Dean Lescher |
5 | | national award for lifetime journalism achievements; he was |
6 | | active in many Lake County chambers of commerce, the Navy |
7 | | League, the Illinois Press Foundation Board of Directors, the |
8 | | Lake County Fair, serving as historian, the Red Cross, and the |
9 | | Long Lake Yacht Club, where he served as Commodore and Judge; |
10 | | he also served on the boards of Condell Hospital, Fox Lake |
11 | | State Bank, and Carmel Catholic High School; and
|
12 | | WHEREAS, His favorite hobbies were gardening, boating, |
13 | | reading, music, and rooting for the Chicago Cubs; and |
14 | | WHEREAS, William Schroeder is survived by his wife of |
15 | | almost 50 years, Nancy; his children, William (Lisa), Jill |
16 | | (Bill) McDermott, Karen (Jim) Miller, and Robert (Elise); his |
17 | | grandchildren Erika, John, Alexandra, Nicole, Thomas, |
18 | | Caroline, Marshall, and William; and his brother, Robert |
19 | | (Elizabeth) Schroeder; therefore, be it

20 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL |
21 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with |
22 | | his family and friends, the passing of William Schroeder; and |
