SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Frances Hrovatin Troha of Waukegan, who
4passed away on March 20, 2011; and
 
5    WHEREAS, She was born on January 27, 1910 in Waukegan, to
6Slovenian immigrants Mary (nee Opeka) and Jacob Hrovatin; she
7married the late August Robert Troha in 1947; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Cultural activities at Waukegan's Slovenic Hall
9were the hub of her childhood; she became a life-time member
10and later, an officer of the SNPJ Society; she was also an
11active member and officer in the Waukegan Women's Club; her
12strongest affiliation was her membership in Christ Episcopal
13Church in Waukegan, where she taught Sunday school for forty
14years and was an active participant in numerous Outreach
15programs; through the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago, she
16established and administered a Naturalization Education and
17Testing Center at Christ Episcopal Church; she also served as a
18member of the Hunger Task Force and worked actively for Heifer
19Project International; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Family hardships did not allow her to complete her
21high school education when she was a teen; through
22determination and perseverance, she later earned a GED and

1diplomas from dance schools in Chicago, which enabled her to
2establish her own dance studio in Waukegan; she later taught
3children's tap and ballet in her home, gave eighth grade
4graduation dance lessons, and taught Ballroom Dance for the
5Waukegan Adult Evening School; having earned many college
6credit hours, she was asked to add GED and Adult Basic
7Education courses to her Evening School teaching load, while
8working in telephone sales at Sears Roebuck; and
 
9    WHEREAS, By 1963, she earned a Provisional Teaching
10Certificate and began teaching in the North Chicago Public
11Schools; she received her BS in Education from Carthage College
12in 1969 and transferred her teaching skills to the Waukegan
13Public Schools; she earned her Masters Degree in Education from
14National Louis University and retired in 1975; she continued to
15teach evening school courses at the College of Lake County
16until her mid-eighties; and
 
17    WHEREAS, She actively enjoyed family gatherings, dining at
18restaurants, traveling, walking, watching Channel 11, reading,
19drawing, and communing with nature; and
 
20    WHEREAS, She was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary
21(Mitzi) Courser and Estelle Watts; and her brothers, Frank,
22John, and Victor Hrovatin; and

1    WHEREAS, Frances Troha is survived by her sister, Christine
2(Tina) Henriksen; her many nieces and nephews; and her
3children, Maryfrances Troha (Greg Thompson) and Thomas (Tim)
4Troha, II (Rita); she was "Nana" to her granddaughters,
5Meredith Maseman (Brian), Christina Harris (Don), Ashley
6Butler-Troha, and Tess Troha-Thompson; and her 5
7great-grandchildren, Madelyn and Brayden Maseman, Abigail and
8Jackson Harris, and Scarlett Butler-Troha; therefore, be it
 
9    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
10ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
11her family and friends, the passing of Frances Hrovatin Troha;
12and be it further
 
13    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14presented to the family of Frances Hrovatin Troha as a symbol
15of our sincere sympathy.
