SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Melvin Alexander, Sr. of Chicago, who
4passed away on January 10, 2011; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Melvin Alexander, Sr. was born on January 23,
61932, in Chicago, the son of Carmella and William Alexander; he
7was a graduate of Wendell Phillips High School in Chicago; he
8received further education in California, specializing in the
9area of law enforcement; and
 
10    WHEREAS, He was baptized at the Canaan Baptist Church by
11the late Reverend Essex Elijah Franklin; and
 
12    WHEREAS, He served in the United States Army and was a
13decorated Artillery Sergeant in the Korean War; he served for
1433 years with the Chicago Police Department, served the city of
15Chicago as Special Detail to the late Mayor Harold Washington,
16and subsequently as Executive Director of the Office of
17Municipal Investigations; and
 
18    WHEREAS, He later served the Cook County Sheriff's
19department as Director of the Child Support Enforcement
20Division until his retirement; and

1    WHEREAS, He has a deep love for his family; he was a
2devoted husband and father, a caring brother, and a person who
3made an impression on others; and
 
4    WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his sister, Geraldine
5Floyd; his brother, Leslie Alexander, Sr.; and his son, Melvin
6Alexander, Jr.; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Melvin Alexander, Sr. is survived by his
8daughters, Angela Holbrook (Frank) and Aileen Gay (Derrick);
9his sons, Anthony and Michael (Rosemary); his sisters,
10Elverneece A. Moore and Norma J. Cantrell; his sister-in-law,
11Yolanda Alexander; his 17 grandchildren; his 17
12great-grandchildren; his nieces, nephews, other relatives, and
13friends; therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
15ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
16his family and friends, the passing of Melvin Alexander, Sr.;
17and be it further
 
18    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19presented to the family of Melvin Alexander, Sr. as a symbol of
20our sincere sympathy.
