2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Julie W. Schaffner, who passed away on |
4 | | December 31, 2010; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, She was born and raised in Montezuma, Virginia and |
6 | | was proud of her southern roots; she earned a bachelor's degree |
7 | | and a master's degree from the University of Virginia; she |
8 | | moved to Chicago in 1980 to work as a health care consultant |
9 | | and in 1988 became vice president of nursing for Lutheran |
10 | | General (now, Advocate Lutheran General); she was named the |
11 | | Chief Operating Officer in 2002; and |
12 | | WHEREAS, She was very proud of her healthcare career as an |
13 | | RN and also bringing her Southern charm and extensive training |
14 | | as a nurse in carrying out her duties as the Chief Operating |
15 | | Officer of Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, |
16 | | where she oversaw a staff of over 3,700 full-time employees; |
17 | | and

18 | | WHEREAS, She was instrumental in helping the hospital |
19 | | achieve a "Magnet" designation, an honor bestowed on nursing |
20 | | organizations by the American Nurses Association, in 2005 and |
21 | | 2010; and |

1 | | WHEREAS, She co-wrote "Rx for the Nursing Shortage" in |
2 | | 2003, as well as a tutorial modeled on the book that is used by |
3 | | hospitals nationwide; and |
4 | | WHEREAS, She was involved with several national nursing |
5 | | groups, serving on the American Organization of Nurse |
6 | | Executives Publications Committee, the Journal of Nursing |
7 | | Administration Editorial Board, and serving as the nursing |
8 | | representative on Advocate Health Care's Medical Clinic |
9 | | Affairs Committee; and |
10 | | WHEREAS, She was a Wharton Fellow through the Johnson & |
11 | | Johnson/Wharton Fellows Program in Management for Nurse |
12 | | Executives at the University of Pennsylvania and a fellow of |
13 | | the American College of Healthcare Executives; and |
14 | | WHEREAS, Julie Schaffner was the loving wife of Thomas P. |
15 | | Schaffner for 26 years; she was the devoted mother of Lindsay |
16 | | E., Brian P., and Kendall E. Schaffner; she was the cherished |
17 | | daughter of Joan and the late Everette Wine; she was the dear |
18 | | sister of Jeffrey (Brenda) Wine; and she was the fond aunt of |
19 | | Nathan and Kellie Wine and Kyle Schaffner; therefore, be it

20 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL |
21 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with |
22 | | her family and friends, the passing of Julie Schaffner; and be |
