|

| Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, |
3 |
| represented in the General Assembly:
|

| Section 5. The School Code is amended by changing Section |
5 |
| 21-5 as follows:
|

| (105 ILCS 5/21-5) (from Ch. 122, par. 21-5)
|

| Sec. 21-5. High school certificate.
|
8 |
| (a) A high school certificate shall be
valid for 4 years |
9 |
| for teaching in grades 6 to 12 inclusive of the
the common
|
10 |
| schools. Subject to the provisions of Section 21-1a, it shall |
11 |
| be issued
to persons who have graduated from a recognized |
12 |
| institution of higher learning
with a bachelor's degree and |
13 |
| with not fewer than 120 semester hours including
16 semester |
14 |
| hours in professional education, 5 of which shall be in student
|
15 |
| teaching under competent and close supervision and with one or |
16 |
| more teaching
fields. Such persons shall be recommended
for the |
17 |
| high school certificate by a recognized institution as having |
18 |
| completed
an approved program of preparation which includes the |
19 |
| academic and professional
courses approved by the State |
20 |
| Superintendent of Education in consultation
with the State |
21 |
| Teacher Certification Board. |

| (b) Beginning February 15, 2000, Initial and Standard
|
23 |
| Secondary
Certificates
shall be issued to persons who meet all |
