HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION 88

 
2     WHEREAS, In 1885, the 34th Illinois General Assembly passed
3 legislation to establish a soldiers' and sailors' home for
4 disabled Illinois veterans of the Mexican and Civil Wars; and
 
5     WHEREAS, On June 1, 1886, Governor Richard Oglesby decided
6 on Quincy as the site of the new home; the home is the largest
7 and oldest veterans home of the four located in Illinois, and
8 one of the larger and older veterans homes in the country; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Originally named "Soldiers and Sailors Home"
10 until 1974, it is currently home to nearly 600 veterans and
11 their spouses; over 70 of the 102 counties in Illinois are
12 represented within the current membership; and
 
13     WHEREAS, The Illinois Veterans' Home at Quincy is
14 responsible for providing economical and quality long-term
15 care for veterans and their spouses, which includes domiciliary
16 care, intermediate care, and skilled care; and
 
17     WHEREAS, Sunset Cemetery is located on the grounds of the
18 Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy; and
 
19     WHEREAS, Over 7,000 veterans and spouses are laid to rest
20 at Sunset Cemetery, dating back to the Civil War, including a

1 large number of Medal of Honor recipients; and
 
2     WHEREAS, A section of U.S. Route 24 runs through Quincy;
3 therefore, be it
 
4     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
5 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
6 SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that the section of U.S. Route 24
7 that runs from the Mississippi River to the junction of U.S.
8 Route 24 and Interstate 172, north of Quincy, be designated
9 "The Veterans Medal of Honor Highway"; and be it further
 
10     RESOLVED, That the Department of Transportation is
11 requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with State
12 regulations, appropriate signs giving notice of the name; and
13 be it further
 
14     RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
15 presented to the Secretary of the Illinois Department of
16 Transportation and to the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy.
