| SENATE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois |
3 |
| learned with sadness of the death of Matilda "Tillie" Dennis of |
4 |
| Chicago on June 25, 2005; and
|
5 |
| WHEREAS, She was born August
27, 1930, to Matilda Pinkard |
6 |
| and James Thorn in Montgomery, Alabama; after the death of her |
7 |
| mother, she and her four siblings moved to Chicago when she was |
8 |
| one year old; and
|
9 |
| WHEREAS, Mrs. Dennis graduated from Corpus Christi |
10 |
| Elementary School and attended DuSable High School; she was |
11 |
| baptized in the Catholic Church and her strong faith sustained |
12 |
| her throughout her life; and
|
13 |
| WHEREAS, She was an avid reader who gladly shared facts and |
14 |
| antidotes from the vast literary works she read; she was an |
15 |
| alumnus of Altgeld Gardens where she raised her children and |
16 |
| formed lifelong relationships with a host of friends who |
17 |
| cherished her; and
|
18 |
| WHEREAS, She worked in several occupations throughout her |
19 |
| life; she managed her brother's restaurants (Prince & Joy's) |
20 |
| for many years and, later in her life, her love for young |
21 |
| people drew her to the University of Chicago where she served |
22 |
| as the late night "mama" for more than 20 years until her |
23 |
| retirement; and
|
24 |
| WHEREAS, Anyone who knew Tillie also knew that her children |
25 |
| and family always came first; her happiest moments were when |
26 |
| she was sharing time with them and celebrating the special and |
27 |
| not-so-special occasions; and
|
28 |
| WHEREAS, She was preceded in death by her sons, Jimmy and |
29 |
| Ronnie, her mother and father, and her brothers and sisters; |
