| HOUSE RESOLUTION
|
2 |
| WHEREAS, The Illinois State Board of Education has reported |
3 |
| that today there are more than twice as many children in |
4 |
| Illinois diagnosed with autism as there were only five years |
5 |
| ago; and
|
6 |
| WHEREAS, It is estimated that fewer than one in ten |
7 |
| children with autism receive the level and type of services |
8 |
| recommended by the National Research Council; and
|
9 |
| WHEREAS, Families of children with autism bear an enormous |
10 |
| financial burden of providing needed services and healthcare; |
11 |
| and
|
12 |
| WHEREAS, Public entities such as the Illinois Autism |
13 |
| Training and Technical Assistance Project and private entities |
14 |
| like Giant Steps of Illinois provide educational and |
15 |
| therapeutic services to enable children with autism to achieve |
16 |
| their maximum potential and strive to improve a child's ability |
17 |
| to interact, communicate, and develop academic and daily life |
18 |
| skills; these groups work cooperatively with local school |
19 |
| districts to reintegrate students with autism into their home |
20 |
| school on a full-time or part-time basis based on the |
21 |
| individual needs of the student; therefore, be it
|

| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
23 |
| NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
24 |
| we name the month of April 2006 as Autism Awareness Month in |
25 |
| the State of Illinois, and we recognize and commend the parents |
26 |
| and relatives of children with autism for their sacrifice and |
27 |
| dedication in providing for the special needs of children with |
28 |
| autism and for absorbing significant financial costs for |
29 |
| specialized education and support services; and be it further
|
30 |
| RESOLVED, That we support the goals of expanding supports |
