| WHEREAS, The Church of St. Edmund (King and Martyr) is |
3 |
| celebrating its 100th anniversary of bringing Christ into the |
4 |
| lives of God's people; and
|
5 |
| WHEREAS, In 1905, the Church of St. Edmund (King and |
6 |
| Martyr), then known as the Washington Park Mission, held its |
7 |
| first services in a basement room at 55th Street and Wabash |
8 |
| Avenue; in 1906, the name was changed to St. Edmunds Mission |
9 |
| and, because of its rapid growth, the church moved to 5831 S. |
10 |
| Indiana, where, under the leadership of Father Samuel J. |
11 |
| Martin, the church grew; eventually, the church acquired a new |
12 |
| facility at its current location, 6105 S. Michigan; and
|
13 |
| WHEREAS, As the church grew, they established the St. |
14 |
| Edmund's Parochial School and the St. Edmund's Credit Union and |
15 |
| constructed the Father Samuel J. Martin Annex; during this |
16 |
| time, the Father Samuel J. Martin Foundation was formed to |
17 |
| provide a permanent endowment to help maintain St. Edmund's; |
18 |
| and
|
19 |
| WHEREAS, In 1989, Rev. Dr. Richard L. Tolliver became the |
20 |
| rector of St. Edmund's; under his expert guidance, St. Edmund's |
21 |
| has made tremendous strides; he organized the St. Edmund's |
22 |
| Redevelopment Corporation, which has provided hundreds of |
23 |
| units of affordable housing for families in the Washington Park |
24 |
| Community; and
|
25 |
| WHEREAS, The church prayerfully and joyfully celebrated |
26 |
| its 100th Anniversary with an Opening Ceremony patterned after |
27 |
| the Olympics and a solemn Mass; an African Diaspora Festival; a |
28 |
| Lenten Renewal Lecture Series; a Spring Fundraising Luncheon; a |
29 |
| golf tournament; a centennial cruise to the Bahamas; and a |
30 |
| Homecoming weekend featuring a Jazz Brunch and a Jazz Mass; in |
31 |
| December, the church will hold a special Closing Ceremony, |
