2 | WHEREAS, On October 26th, 2005, the Chicago White Sox | ||||||
3 | became the 101st World Champions of Major League Baseball under | ||||||
4 | the tutelage of second year coach and manager, Oswaldo "Ozzie" | ||||||
5 | Guillen; with the assistance of General Manger, Kenny Williams, | ||||||
6 | and Chicago White Sox Owner, Jerry Reinsdorf, Ozzie assembled | ||||||
7 | the best team in Major League Baseball; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Ozzie Guillen was named the thirty-seventh | ||||||
9 | manager in White Sox history on November 3rd, 2003; he became | ||||||
10 | the first native of Venezuela to manage a major-league team and | ||||||
11 | is one of seven minority managers in the major leagues, along | ||||||
12 | with San Francisco's Felipe Alou, the Cub's Dusty Baker, | ||||||
13 | Pittsburgh's Lloyd McClendon, Kansas City's Tony Pena, the | ||||||
14 | Mets' Willie Randolf, and Washington's Frank Robinson; he is | ||||||
15 | one of only three Latin managers in Major League Baseball and | ||||||
16 | is the first Venezuelan manager to ever win the World Series of | ||||||
17 | Major League Baseball; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Manager Ozzie Guillen has demonstrated allegiance | ||||||
19 | to the city of Chicago and the State of Illinois by becoming a | ||||||
20 | coach of the Chicago White Sox, a tenure lasting over 18 years | ||||||
21 | in the city of Chicago; Ozzie is one of six managers running | ||||||
22 | their former team; and
| ||||||
23 | WHEREAS, Ozzie Guillen played for the Chicago White Sox for | ||||||
24 | sixteen years, from 1985 to 1997; during that time, he played | ||||||
25 | in three All-Star games; he ranks as the best all-time White | ||||||
26 | Sox shortstop with a .976 fielding percentage; he was awarded | ||||||
27 | the 1985 Rookie of the Year Award and received the Gold Glove | ||||||
28 | Award in 1990; and

29 | WHEREAS, For the last six years, Ozzie Guillen has headed | ||||||
30 | the Ozzie Guillen Foundation, a foundation that has helped | ||||||
31 | children suffering from AIDS and cancer and children from |

| |||||||
1 | underprivileged families; he was honored by the city of Chicago | ||||||
2 | with "Ozzie Guillen Week" for his efforts in embracing | ||||||
3 | Chicago's Latin American community; and

4 | WHEREAS, Ozzie Guillen is one of only six Chicago White Sox | ||||||
5 | manager's to win the American League Pennant, and is one of | ||||||
6 | only three White Sox manager's to win the Central Division | ||||||
7 | Title; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, The 2005 Chicago White Sox, led by coach and | ||||||
9 | manager, Ozzie Guillen, won the American League Central | ||||||
10 | Division with 99 wins and 63 losses and entered the post-season | ||||||
11 | by defeating the 2004 MLB World Series Champions, the Boston | ||||||
12 | Red Sox, sweeping the Red Sox three games to none in the | ||||||
13 | American League Division Series; and

14 | WHEREAS, The Chicago White Sox soundly defeated the Los | ||||||
15 | Angeles Angels of Anaheim four games to one to become the first | ||||||
16 | Chicago White Sox team in forty-six years to reach the World | ||||||
17 | Series; and

18 | WHEREAS, The 2005 Chicago White Sox are the first Chicago | ||||||
19 | White Sox team in eighty-eight years to become Major League | ||||||
20 | Baseball's World Champions; and
| ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, Ozzie Guillen is the third manager in White Sox | ||||||
22 | franchise history to win the World Series of Major League | ||||||
23 | Baseball by sweeping the Houston Astros; therefore, be it
| ||||||
24 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
25 | NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
26 | we recognize and applaud Oswaldo "Ozzie" Guillen for his | ||||||
27 | accomplishments, enthusiasm, and vision during the 2005 | ||||||
28 | season, for his dedication and community service to the city of | ||||||
29 | Chicago and the State of Illinois, and for his outstanding | ||||||
30 | leadership throughout the 2005 season; and be it further
